Sitting Bull, also known as Tatanka Iyotake, was a revered Native American leader of the Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux tribe. Born in 1831 near the Grand River in present-day South Dakota, Sitting Bull played a significant role in the struggle between the Lakota Sioux and the encroaching European settlers.

Sitting Bull grew up in a time of great change and conflict as white settlers began to move onto traditional Native American lands. He witnessed the decline of the buffalo herds, which were a vital source of sustenance and cultural significance for Native communities. This loss fueled his determination to protect his people's way of life and resist the encroachment of outsiders.

Sitting Bull's leadership abilities became evident at a young age. He participated in his first war party at just 14 years old and soon became renowned for his bravery and tactical skills. His reputation grew as he led successful raids against rival tribes and later against American forces.

In 1876, Sitting Bull played a pivotal role in the Battle of Little Bighorn, one of the most famous conflicts in the history of the American West. Alongside other Lakota and Cheyenne warriors, Sitting Bull led a united force against General George Custer and his 7th Cavalry.
