To Yukon, my best friend:

You were and always will be my soul cat. Time has drawn us apart, but I hold out hope that we will one day meet again. You have carried me through years of transformation, from middle school to high school and on through college. Every step of the way, I could count on your steady companionship. When I felt alone, you were there, healing me with your contended purrs. I am so thankful for every day that I could wake to your sleepy yawns and come home to your excited meows and night-time cuddles. My sunshine cat, I hope you’ve found rest in a warm sunny spot with an endless supply of grass to munch and chicken to eat. You’re the best girl, and I love you so so much. Losing you has been the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but loving you has truly meant the world.

I had the honor of witnessing the beautiful ceremony to honor Ed Johnson and his legacy.

Ed Johnson was an African American man who was murdered by a lynch mob on March 19, 1906, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Without any evidence, a biased jury sentenced Johnson to death for the r**e of a white woman. The US Supreme Court granted Johnson a stay of his ex*****on, but the hostile mob stormed the jail and killed him on the Walnut Street Pedestrian Bridge.

The Ed Johnson Memorial Dedication unveiled three statues of Johnson and his two African American attorneys by the design of Jerome Meadows. It was a reconciliation with guest speakers, music, poetry, and a performance by the Chattanooga Choral Society for the Preservation of African American Song.

The experience was so powerful and emotional. These moments felt like a true community--one with a goal of understanding and respect. So many people gathered for this celebration despite the rain. The resilience and hope for an empathetic future was so clear.

I hope that we as a community will remember and acknowledge the dark past so that we can honor those lost to racial injustice. We need to lift up our neighbors who are hurting and dismantle the injustices that threaten to destroy us. Unity will make us strong. As Dr. Eddie Glaude said, we need to recognize our humanity.

I understand that I will never understand, but I stand with you. I love you, and I want to help you. As humans beings, we are all the same in our wants and needs. We all need and desire love, understanding, fairness, safety, and acceptance. We all need to make a change for equality to truly come true.

Happy Earth Day 🌎

Let's remember to respect our planet and all of its creatures. The snow leopard has always been one of my favorite animals (and also my absolute favorite). It thrives in such harsh conditions of the Himalayan Mountains and is a beauty to behold, but there are estimated to be only between 3,920 and 6,390 of snow leopards in our world today. These beautiful cats are struggling due to poaching, retribution killing, mining, and climate change. We can help them.

For my fellow Class of 2020:

I know these are hard times. We wonder if we will have our prom or graduation. We wonder what our graduation will look like if social distancing continues through May. We want so badly to remember our last senior days in joy and happiness. We want to gather together and talk about our shared memories over these 12+ years. We want to be together.

Despite how badly we want these things, they may happen differently than we expect or not happen at all. We want to be sad and angry that our senior year may end so strangely.

However, I want us to be brave in these questionable times. We are strong people. We have each other even if we communicate through a screen. We need to be strong for those that Covid-19 threaten so severely. We need to do our part for others.

Please be considerate of those around you and do what you can to stop the spread. I have seen many of us that don't think this is serious. It may not be a serious threat for you, but it is for so many others. This virus is strong, but we as humans are stronger. If we come together, we can stop it as one.

Please do your part. Let's choose hope instead of fear and anger. Let's work to stop this virus. Let's do what we can to save lives. When it comes to saving lives, our senior memories can wait.

Let's be strong. I love you all, and I know we can do it.

^^^I hope this post doesn't make anyone mad. I am saying these things to myself as much as anyone else. It is okay for us to be sad about the possibilities of our senior year, but let's try to look ahead and protect others. I just think we should focus on protecting others because lives matter more than our graduation or prom.

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."

Love endures all things. Martin Luther King, Jr. fought for the rights of all people. We may not all look or act the same way, but that cannot change our eternally-bound relationship with one another. We are all human. Humans love, laugh, cry, succeed, and fail. We all face the same challenges and successes. In truth, we are the same. We are a people of hope.
MLK strived for peace. Today, hate erupts and destroys the bond we all share. Haters, supremacists, racists, and bigots still exist. They tear apart what should not be torn--our connection with one another. More violence and hostility will not fix the problem. Love is the only thing that can drive out the hatred. It is strong. It is loyal. It is passionate. It is substantial.
It is love.
We need to love each other. This will sustain us and shield us from hate.
Dr. King fervently advocated for a connected, peace-filled world. We should, too. Let's love our people.
