Headshot vs Portrait
When choosing between a headshot and a portrait for professional publications, a headshot is generally the more effective option. It communicates confidence, approachability, and competence. A headshot tightly frames the face, allowing viewers to immediately connect with the subject’s expression, eye contact, and demeanor. These are key elements in building trust and credibility in a business or academic setting.
In contrast, a portrait, which often includes more of the body and background, can introduce distractions or convey a more artistic or personal tone that may not align with specific professional objectives. Portraits can showcase personality and creativity, particularly in artistic professions. However, most professional contexts, such as LinkedIn profiles, company websites, conference programs, benefit from the clean, direct, and polished impression that a well-executed headshot provides.
Both these pictures are cropped in a LinkedIn-square format but one was intentionally shot as a headshot, the other was shot as a portrait. Even if cropped in a LinkedIn-square format, it is still a portrait and does not necessarily convey professionalism or competence. What say you?
