all goats go to heaven

up in these parts
any existing anxiety in this head
is for my own aging body

the ruminating disappears
about men f’in things up
disappearing everything i hold dear

i believe more in the instincts
in the skill of nature
to survive the worst in men

cuz when they look at me
with a knowing of superior confidence
it releases my tension

if they’re not worried
why then should I be
but for the guns, man is outmatched

the marmots are there
to call attention to the danger
the perfect warning system

if a stray bullet should interfere
with the peace found in the eyes of the wild
nothing changes here

they continually show me
all day, every day
that all goats know the way to heaven

and their ability to get there with such ease
brings me peace

coyote crossing

as the call of the coyote makes its way
from water’s edge to the end of the plains
it takes with it my prayers and worries
up to the clouds where only wind hurries
it all comes back down as glimmering snow
like an autumn leaf, falling nice and slow
watching flakes land, then melt on new grass
suddenly it’s the now, no future, no past
and seeing new bison life cling to its mother
i wonder of mine as sun peaks from cloud cover
was it she or dad or god who read my mind
then carefully timed these wondrous finds
knowing how I love the wild and snow frosting
all three are to thank for coyote crossing

Lessons in Nature…..Don’t Talk to Strangers

slowing down

she places her future
near a culvert by the crossing
quite positively confident
in the safety of her goslings

trying not to project
my anxious state of mind
i watch her lead her family
right through our daily grind

i can’t help but wonder
how soon it just might be
before humans do what they do
in the name of speed and greed

but the goose’s perceived disregard
for humans and our chaos
brought me back to the present
and the smell of the fresh cut grass

i guess, instead of worrying
about things that may not even pass
i’ll sit here and learn a thing or two
‘bout geese, slowing down, and grass

mother madre mutter ama

a mother’s touch
reassuring
her boundary lines
never blurring
a mother’s patience
always tested
her matriarchy
fully invested

a mother’s strength
determination
a mother’s gift
new generations
her greatest assets
wisdom and love
perceived threat to the patriarchy
all of the above

some birds are rare
others are bright
some soar for days
some never take flight
but out on a prairie
where water is near
the sounds of this bird
i’ll always hold dear
it takes me back
to the old studebaker
when grandpa and i
fished at the lake
after throwing my line
then sitting to eat
my grandpa told stories
of Missouri heat
made me so thankful
for prairie winds
that held up my prayers
and cooled down my sins
but mostly for lifting
the choir my soul heard
sung for my heart
by red winged black birds
