The art of .huahin

The art of Muay Thai begins long before the first strike.

Each fight opens with the Wai Kru Ram Muay — a ceremonial dance rooted in respect, discipline, and lineage. Fighters move slowly and intentionally, paying homage to their teachers, ancestors, and the gyms that shaped them. Every gesture carries meaning of protection, gratitude, focus.

What looks like choreography is actually preparation of the mind.

Muay Thai isn’t only about strength or victory — it’s about honoring where you come from, carrying culture through movement, and stepping into the ring with humility as much as power.

Frank and I’s preferred way to get around Bangkok is the tuk-tuk. Tuk-tuks are three-wheeled motorized vehicles used as taxis across Southeast Asia. They’re fast, reliable, and the drivers are usually friendly.

Yesterday we hopped in one to run an errand, and suddenly we heard Dr. Dre’s “Still D.R.E.” blasting from the sea of traffic. A driver on a scooter pulled up next to us, noticed my camera, and immediately started posing.

I usually avoid pointing my camera directly at people — it can feel intrusive. But moments like that make me wonder: what if sometimes the camera isn’t an invasion… but an invitation??

Ive been studying a lot of street photography lately, and the biggest takeaway? You might get 5 strong frames out of 1,000. Some days that ratio will make you question everything you create. Then the next day, you go back out and maybe it’s 10 out of 100.

Today felt different. I walked away genuinely proud of most of what I captured.

Two reminders I’m keeping:
1. Bring my camera everywhere.
2. Get a little closer when photographing people.

The work gets better when you stay in it.
