This image has me really wishing I were a talented oil painter…because…right?

Photographing women in relaxed postures is cathartic. There’s so much conditioning to pose to (and beyond) what feels natural and comfortable.

Over the years I’ve become more and more disenchanted with over-exertion for the sake of a photo. I’ve instead come to embrace that celebrating women as art means pushing less and noticing more.

Charging up for a very full season of artfulness with incredible clients and muses that kicks off in 1 week. ALSO darlings, I created a broadcast group for those who want to be in-the-know of upcoming timeslots and photoshoot opportunities called “Kara Marie’s Muses”- link in profile if you’d like in. 🖤

Part I: Printing postcards from my client archives just for the sake of nostalgia ✨

First up, 🥁 it’s LINDSAY 🖤

I kept saying that I’d be bringing back this series…to kick it off I ended up choosing 4 clients instead of one. There were so many sessions to choose from dating all the way back to 2011 🤯 and so many emotions came up as I went through old galleries. Everything has changed and nothing has changed. 🖤

I am rejecting the idea that prints, handwritten letters, wax seals, and all the other good tangible moments are fading away with this series. I’ll just be over here honoring things I can touch in this pixel vortex.

3 more postcard printings coming up! Be on the lookout for yours. If you’re a client and want to throw your name in the hat for the next round (and give consent for me to choose an image and share it with the world) drop a comment here! ⬇️

My immovable stance: If it’s only digital, it’s not done yet.

I am a fierce protector of the practice of printing your photos; professional, personal, mundane, cover-worthy, everything.

Printing makes it tangible. It makes it complete. It documents and preserves moments in time for the future, dammit.

Technology will keep changing. Time will keep blasting forward. The vortex of the digital space will continue to expand, likely with less and less substance. But I will be keeping my kung fu grip on the real & tangible for the rest of my life.

When I’m stumped on the next step of a project, I print what I’ve got and lay it out on the floor, moving prints around like a jigsaw puzzle. It’s the only way. I can’t do it in an app or on a screen.

This fresh batch of test prints from is about to have some floor time as I work through the next phase of an Italian photo project collaboration with for .lakecomo .

Tease more soon.

You say “THERE I AM!!?” and you are reminded of all your favorite parts of yourself.

What does that photo look like? Feel like? No wrong answers.

Hotel room self portrait challenge.

I like to push myself to shoot a few frames when I’m at a hotel — something outside of the obvious bed lying scenario. There’s usually not much space to work with and less than stellar lighting, but when there’s obstacles like that, I find myself liking the result better. Forced creative problem solving.

The first frame is one of my new favorites. I love the lighting— backlit softly by a small window behind me— enough for that eyelash detail to really show. The window in front of me gave some nice skin highlights and a few shiny pin points in my 5 day dirty hair that otherwise wasn’t showing any signs of life.

The black fabric I hung behind the window made for an interesting texture, and the mirrored reflection gave a double vision effect. Y’all know I love it when you have to squint a little. 😏

My rules are: never more than 3 minutes to set up, I can’t add to my existing look (ie: no added styling, no fixing hair/makeup), I can only subtract, no more than 10 minutes to shoot, and 10 minutes in post for the whole set. In this case it was 1 minute to set up, 4 minutes to shoot because my Chinese dumpling delivery was getting cold. Can’t have that.

6 minutes of self portraits, testing the distortion on my 16mm lens, balancing (at times) on my side table in my tiny Italian apartment, home alone for the first time in…??? In the final minute I got a phone call that notified me of yet another gut-punch of the bureaucratic variety (never ending). So enjoy that moment with me in the last frames. K bye.
