I was a photographer before I started working in the service industry. For years, I think they’ve gone hand in hand. I’ve been lucky enough to live a life where two of my favorite subjects intersect: portraits and the bar scene.
Working in restaurants since I was a young teen introduced me to people I never would have met otherwise. We created friendships, families, and over the years we have lost some good ones. The industry of serving people has fulfilled my servants heart, given me some of my greatest friends, and created a life full of laughter, jokes, good food, good drinks, and lots of stories.
Sometimes as the bartender, we are a lonely person’s best friend. We are the only ones that hear the truth on a person’s heart. You’re not just a person that puts down a beer, but the person they bring their life to. The good, the bad. The ugly. And we feel it with you. We see you through celebrations, are there for you through struggles.
It’s not just about making drinks or serving food, but about getting to know the people around you that brings a sense of community, belonging, and joy.
I love photographing these little places - not just because they are cute (they are) but because to some people, it feels like home. And home is worth being captured.
