GIG 'EM! The New Texas A&M Aggie Barn

What is a photographer?

Sometimes, it's a 1½-hour drive for a photograph that may or may not happen.

I first spotted this barn in the pre-dawn darkness a couple of months ago. I couldn't make out much more than the words GIG 'EM and Howdy!, but I knew I'd be back. With storm clouds moving through recently, I figured the conditions might be just right, so I made the drive and arrived in the early evening.

Finding the photograph was easy. Finding a place to park wasn't.

This narrow four-lane Texas highway leaves very little room for error. I finally found a place to pull over about a quarter mile away. The shoulder was nothing but tall grass, and as any Texan knows, you don't casually stroll through tall grass in rattlesnake country.

So I walked the edge of the pavement, dodging traffic and keeping one eye out for cascabeles while searching for the best angle. The composition I wanted was from the high side of a curve—across the highway.

That meant setting my tripod just inches from the white line with traffic coming straight at me. Traffic was light, but every vehicle hit a dip in the road just before reaching me, causing the front end to bounce toward my position. It definitely got my attention.

I made the images I came for... and then got out of there.

While this isn't THE Aggie Barn, it's become known as the New Aggie Barn. Built in the spring of 2023, it honors the owners' Aggie heritage. The dates on the side commemorate graduation years, while the front displays their Aggie tree.

As photographed, this image has special meaning to the owners and their family, but probably not to many others. So, I spent the next three hours carefully removing the names and graduation dates.

Since I DO NOT use A.I., every edit was meticulous done by hand by me.

Now I'm curious.

Tripp a Texas Longhorn Bull.

The Historic Driftwood, Texas General Store | Texas Back Roads.

Driftwood got its start in the 1880s as a supply stop for the ranches and farms around it. By 1890, the town had a post office, a school, a couple of churches, and its first general store.

That original store didn't survive. Fire took it out around the turn of the century. The building we see today, went up sometime in 1915, and it's been busy ever since: a general store, mercantile, post office, feed store, laundry and dry cleaner, photography studio, even a domino parlor over the years.

Capland Development bought the site in December 2022, and there's a nice twist to it. Some of their own team's ancestors owned this same building from 1935 to 1946. Plans for its future aren't locked in yet, but the goal is to bring it back as a gathering place for the community that it's always been part of.

Shaggy | Portrait of a Texas Longhorn

Long before Texas was a state, Spanish explorers brought cattle north into what would become the Lone Star State. Over centuries, those hardy animals adapted to the unforgiving frontier, evolving into the Texas Longhorn—one of the most enduring symbols of Texas.

Known for their remarkable resilience, Longhorns survived drought, predators, and the open range, helping shape the ranching heritage that defines much of the state's history.

Some symbols don't need an introduction. The Texas Longhorn is one of them.

Those horns.

Luckenbach, Texas | Where Everybody's Somebody

In 1977, Waylon Jennings introduced the world to a little Hill Country hideaway with his hit song "Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love)."

But Luckenbach was never just about a song.

Waylon sang about it. Willie picnicked here. George Strait played the dance hall before the world knew his name. So did Jerry Jeff Walker. So did Robert Earl Keen.

The music made it famous.

The people, the trees, and the memories made it timeless.

That little General Store.
The old Post Office.
That dance hall.
Those live oaks.
That gravel under your boots.
The roosters in the trees.
The cat in the bar that looks like a statue.

You don't just visit Luckenbach.
You experience it.

You slow down.
You listen.
You remember.
