this juneteenth, i wanted to share a project that i've been quietly working on over the last decade.

for 15+ years, i've photographed small towns all across texas, and i always find myself returning to freedom colonies -- communities founded by formerly enslaved texans after emancipation. many of these places have disappeared or continue to fade into history, but their stories remain an important part of our history.

this post brings together photographs i've made over the years, along with some of the history behind each place. i hope you'll take a few minutes to read it. πŸ‘‡

Some of Texas' most important stories are hidden in plain sight. This Juneteenth, I'm sharing photographs and the history of Freedom Colonies.
