Family photos don’t have to mean standing still and smiling at the camera.

This DFW family photography session was full of everything I love. Kids running, playing, laughing, snuggling the baby and finishing it all off with ice cream.

These are the moments I want to capture. Not just what your family looks like, but what this season of life feels like.

Your kids don’t have to be perfectly behaved. They don’t have to sit still. Let them play, explore and be themselves while I capture the moments in between.

Come as you are, I’ll take care of the rest.

PART 3: This is WHY I have a turnaround time.

Over the last couple of posts, I’ve shared how long it takes me to edit a gallery and WHY the editing process takes so much time.

So you might be wondering…

“If it takes around 5 hours to edit my gallery, why is the turnaround time several weeks?”

Because your gallery isn’t the only gallery in my editing workflow.

During busy seasons, I may photograph several sessions in one week. Each session has to be culled, lightly edited, prepared for a soft proof gallery and sent to the client for selections.

Once those selections come back, the detailed hand editing begins, and as I shared yesterday, that can take another 3 to 4 hours for ONE gallery.

Now multiply that by several sessions!

And editing is only one part of running my photography business. There are sessions to photograph, clients to communicate with, the studio to prepare, upcoming sessions to plan and all the other behind the scenes things that keep Paula Goforth Photography running.

But here’s the biggest reason I have a turnaround time…

I don’t want to rush your images.

I want to sit down with your gallery and give each image the time and attention it deserves.

So when you’re waiting on your gallery, please know it isn’t sitting somewhere forgotten.

It’s simply waiting its turn in a very intentional editing process.

And when it’s YOUR gallery’s turn, I want to give it the same care and attention I gave the gallery before yours.

Because these are your memories, and I want you to LOVE the finished result.

PART 2: Why does editing take so long?

Yesterday I shared how long it can take me to edit a gallery. Today I want to share a little more about WHY it takes that long.

The simple answer?

I hand edit each image.

Once I apply my base edit, that’s really where the detailed work begins.

One of the biggest things I focus on is skin tones. Skin can pull different colors depending on the lighting, clothing and surroundings. I spend time making adjustments so skin tones look natural and true to each person. Sometimes those tiny adjustments can be tedious, but they make such a difference in the finished image.

Then I work on the overall color and warmth. My photography style is warm and earthy, so I want those tones to carry throughout the entire gallery.

And that’s important because I’m not just editing ONE image at a time. I’m also looking at the gallery as a whole. I want the colors and tones to flow beautifully from one image to the next so everything feels cohesive.

Then come the FINAL touches.

Flaky newborn skin, little scratches or bruises on kiddos, flyaway hairs, distracting objects in the background and adjustments to eyes or teeth when needed.

Sometimes those are the smallest details, but they can take the most time!

So yes...editing takes time.

I care about each and every image I deliver, and I want my clients to be happy with their finished gallery.

And do I ever have to go back and rework something?

ABSOLUTELY!

It never offends me when a client asks if something can be adjusted. I may see something differently than you do, and ultimately, these are YOUR memories.

I want YOU to be happy with them.

There’s a whole lot more happening behind the scenes after the camera gets put away. And for me, all those little details are worth the extra time.

I was asked this question the other day…

“How long does it take to edit a gallery?”

The answer might surprise you!

The work definitely does NOT stop after the last click of the camera. Honestly, the session is probably the easy part!

After your session, I take ALL the images, and I mean A LOT, into my editing program and start going through them one by one. I cull everything down to the best of the best, do a light partial edit and prepare your soft proof gallery.

That step alone can take around an hour, sometimes even longer!

Then your soft proof gallery is sent to you and I wait for your selections.

Once you send those back, your images move into my final editing folder, and THIS is where the majority of the work happens.

Final editing usually takes another 3 to 4 hours. I’m adjusting skin tones, tweaking overall color tones, removing minor imperfections and making sure every single image is cohesive with my style and branding.

And yes, sometimes I second guess myself and go back to rethink an edit! I want the entire gallery to flow beautifully together before I send it your way.

So, how long does it take?

Usually around 5 hours, sometimes longer, for ONE gallery.

There is so much happening behind the scenes that clients never see. Your session may be finished, but my work is just getting started!

And I wouldn’t have it any other way. I want you to receive a finished gallery that I’m proud to put the Paula Goforth Photography name on.

Can they at least respond?

Let’s talk about something that happens ALL the time in the photography industry and really, across so many small businesses...ghosting after an inquiry.

A client reaches out.
The photographer sends all the information, pricing and details.
The information is opened.
The photographer waits.
And then...nothing.

There could be so many reasons.

Maybe the session is outside the budget.
Maybe they decided to go with another photographer.
Maybe plans changed.
Maybe life got busy and responding simply slipped their mind.

And you know what? ALL of those reasons are okay!

First and foremost, we are SO thankful you inquired. It truly is a blessing to know that you found us, saw our work and considered trusting us to photograph your family. That means more to a small business owner than you probably realize.

We completely understand that we are not going to be the right photographer or price point for every family. There is NO judgment and NO hard feelings if you decide to go a different direction.

We would just love to hear back.

A simple, “Thank you so much for the information, but we’ve decided to go a different direction” is enough.

So, the next time you inquire with a photographer or another small business and decide not to move forward, just respond back.

We are thankful you considered us, and I promise, it’s okay!

Okay, let’s have a little Monday fun!

What is your LEAST favorite thing about Mondays?

Mine might be realizing the weekend went by way too fast!

But Mondays also mean a fresh start, a new week, and another chance to tackle that never-ending to-do list.

So tell me in the comments... what’s the one thing you dislike most about Mondays? And while we’re at it, is there anything you actually LOVE about Monday?
