Took a slow walk with my son today to look for birds. Didn’t find much. So we talked about using our cameras to make a picture of something interesting around us — even if what’s around us feels boring at first. Look for the best natural light illuminating the things around you. Look for fine details, abstract or geometric patterns, or something mundane that maybe you’ve seen a thousand times - in an effort to see it anew through a lens.

I spent a little time experimenting with duotone, a coloring technique that’s common in print publishing to save money while also achieve an artistic effect. The technique can work well with images where there is bold contrast of dark and light, where you can then introduce one color. I’m using the duotone version of the image below (left) - a rising phoenix in kite form - as my iPhone wallpaper this week to remind me of the sunny walk in the park where I took it last week. Shortly after I took it, the kite plummeted to earth and nearly hit me in the head. Its owner and I had a laugh and I told her, “I’m glad I took the pictures when I did!” There’s a metaphor or a lesson for life in there somewhere…live in the moment? Don’t stand directly under kites?
