There's a few spots on the Cape where you can find lupines blooming in late spring. I took a short birthday hike in Sandwich to check out one of those spots this morning. It was a beautiful day and the flowers were buzzing with bees.

Spring means waterfall season assuming we (hopefully) get a reasonable amount of rain. I took this photo at Sabbaday Falls in June a bunch of years ago. It's not the classic view of Sabbaday Falls but I've always liked the cave-like feel the rock walls give.

Another spring-y shot for you - these lupines bloom every year at Fort Hill in the Cape Cod National Seashore. I'm not sure what the bloom will look like this year as the Park Service did a bunch of work to clear out invasive species and mow the fields.

Although I might grumble about the hot and humid weather that is rapidly enveloping Cape Cod, I can't deny that the flowers we get in the spring are beautiful. I took this photo at sunset in the Cape Cod National Seashore a few years ago.

I visited Great Sand Dunes National Park because we happened to be nearby and I wasn't sure when I'd be in this corner of Colorado again. After visiting, I would really like to plan a trip back with more time to explore!

The dunes were surprisingly massive against the backdrop of the Crestone Peaks and Sangre de Cristo range. I scoped out a few locations for sunset but ultimately the weather did its thing and a spring storm moved in across the mountains blocking out the light. There were a few minutes where the dunes were lit up by the low angle light to the west and the mountains covered in dark storm clouds and that's when I took this photo.

I took this panorama during golden hour before sunset from the summit of Mount Jackson in the White Mountain National Forest of New Hampshire. The sun was setting to the west and bathing the slopes of the Presidential Range with a golden glow that contrasted beautifully with the blue skies above. This sunset hike up Mount Jackson with my friend David Simms might have been my favorite of the winter of 2026. The Presidential Range was covered in clouds and visibility was zero when we left the parking lot. After a few hours of climbing through the snowy forest, however, we broke out of the trees onto the summit of Mount Jackson and were rewarded with this cloudless sky and fantastic view of Mounts Washington, Monroe, Eisenhower, and Pierce.

It might be rapidly approaching summer on the East Coast (yuck) but you'll have to put up with a few more winter posts from me as I catch up on sharing photos from one of the best winters in recent memory.

I absolutely love the way the scraggly high elevation pine trees in the White Mountains look when they are covered in rime ice and fresh snow. The winter of 2026 was cold and snowy and I went on a bunch of hikes surrounded by beautiful snowy frost covered trees. This sunset hike up Mount Jackson with my friend Dave Simms might have been my favorite, though. The Presidential Range was covered in clouds and visibility was zero when we left the parking lot. After a few hours of climbing through the snowy forest, however, we broke out of the trees onto the summit of Mount Jackson and were rewarded with this phenomenal view and beautiful pastel sunset.

The weather has been pretty gross the last couple of days so I’m sharing a photo of the blooming daffodils in Yarmouth Port from last spring.

This panorama of sunrise alpenglow on the east facing ravines of Mount Washington was one of my most hard-won photos of the winter of 2024. I had been wanting to photograph a sunrise from the top of Wildcat D Peak for a few years and finally got a weather window late enough in the year that I wouldn’t have to leave my car at 1am. Even so, I put skis on snow at 5:30am from the parking lot of the Wildcat ski area and it took an hour and a half of high effort skinning to get to the top before the sunrise peaked over the eastern mountains. It was a dark, windy, and cold ascent and it was hard to tell as I was climbing what the sunrise would be like. My effort was rewarded with a beautiful display of alpenglow on Tuckerman and Huntington Ravines. Also visible is the large avalanche that had come down the center of Tuckerman Ravine the day prior.

"Sunrise over Mount Flume and the Sandwich Range"

I took this photo on a very windy morning from the top of Mount Liberty on Franconia Ridge. The sun was rising up from the misty horizon and lighting up Mount Flume in the foreground and the peaks of the Sandwich Range in the distance. I really like the layers of mountains visible in different shades of orange sunrise light.
