Dawn at Broken Top

I took this photo on the walk back to the car after shooting sunrise at Sparks Lake near Bend, Oregon. A bunch of wildfire smoke had blown into the mountains overnight from a fire in eastern Washington and the light was catching the smoke and the dawn mist on the lake beautifully. This photo reminds me of the view across Lonesome Lake to Franconia Ridge but with the jagged volcanic slopes of Broken Top looming above the pine trees instead of the smoother lines of the White Mountains.

Whenever I travel I try to find the best places to go take some photos. This usually leads to an article like “10 Great Landscape Photography Spots in Bend” which features a list of ten spots where everyone goes to try to take the same photo they’ve seen on Instagram.

I usually try to avoid that and instead try to find different compositions or different spots entirely so that I’m actually taking a photo that I like as opposed to something that I saw and am trying to recreate. Sometimes, however, the best spots are the best for a reason and that’s the case with Sparks Lake. My brother and I bounced along the dirt road to the parking area in the dark and found the path that leads along the lake. With the dry winter, the water was really low but in the early morning it was still perfectly calm with a slight mist gathering on the surface.

Some wildfire smoke had blown in from eastern Washington overnight but as the sun rose it still lit up some isolated spots on the slopes of South Sister. I walked all around the slopes of the lake finding different compositions with the trees and mountain arranged different ways. It was pretty difficult to take a bad photo, though. This lake is one of the most stunningly beautiful places I’ve ever been.

The 15 minutes after the sun went below the horizon was the best part of this sunrise in early June in Chatham, MA. The light coming up from below the horizon to the west reflected beautifully off the high clouds. As the wind picked up, I explored around behind the dunes and found a few more sections of beach roses that were protected enough by the wind to stay still enough for a long exposure in the fading light.

Cape Cod Beach Rose Sunset

I finally made it out to photograph some beach roses right at the end of their bloom on Cape Cod. The weather cooperated for a trip to Chatham for sunset and I got almost the exact shot I've been visualizing in my head since I first found this dune fencing and the old lifesaving station back in October.

I found some more lupines in Sandwich this past weekend - they're maybe not as rare around the Cape as I thought they were! I also found this tiny baby turtle marching through the grass.

Six years ago, I saw one of the most impressive sunsets at Fort Hill in . A rainstorm cleared out right at sunset leaving behind a rainbow in front of the colorful storm clouds and the huge bloom of lupines. The only downside was the 10+ ticks that tried to hitch a ride home with me after sunset ended.

Summer hiking season is almost upon us! In this photo, you can see Lonesome Lake glinting in the last light of the day as Franconia Ridge glows pink in the distance.
