CURRENT BARRIER: AIDS Healthcare Fund (AHF) – organization working at Federal level to support continuance of funding for hundreds of medications that are used for a variety of conditions (including HIV/AIDS, cancer, chronic pain). Meds are currently required to be provided at low cost or free to patients who cannot afford them. Medical providers (hospitals, pharmacies) get money for providing the meds. The subsidies account for about 2% of all pharma profits. Pharma is working to decrease or eliminate this program, claiming that Affordable Healthcare act has led to more usage.
AHF is holding a Speak Out campaign to encourage Sen. Upton (Chair of Commerce and Energy Committee) to support continuance of funding at current levels. They need people to send postcards, write letters (to Upton and newspapers), volunteer, and use social media. See www.aidshealth.org. Cards to be available at Resource Center.

Issues:
Marriage currently any child of a married heteros*xual couple is legally a product of that marriage. Does not apply to homos*xual couples. Potentially could affect child support and parenting, when/whether children receive parents’ Social Security benefits.
Wording of statutes needs to be updated to be gender neutral.
Cannot take a position on partisan issues or any area that judge could potentially have to decide in court (due to legal cannon prohibition).
