COMMITTEE NAME: Public Issues Forum
FUNCTION OF COMMITTEE: The purpose of the Battle Creek Pride Public Issues Forum is to gather information about issues affecting the LGBT community and to disseminate information to residents as a whole to enable them to make informed decisions
CHAIR OF COMMITTEE: Fred Hayes
COMMITTEE MEMBERS: In attendance – Fred, Terry, Rebecca, Larry, Deana, Tina Yost
Date of Last Meeting: April 19, 2016
Date of Next Meeting: July 21, 2016
Action Items that are in Progress or Pending:
● Deana – 403B Drug Pricing legislation
CURRENT BARRIER: AIDS Healthcare Fund (AHF) – organization working at Federal level to support continuance of funding for hundreds of medications that are used for a variety of conditions (including HIV/AIDS, cancer, chronic pain). Meds are currently required to be provided at low cost or free to patients who cannot afford them. Medical providers (hospitals, pharmacies) get money for providing the meds. The subsidies account for about 2% of all pharma profits. Pharma is working to decrease or eliminate this program, claiming that Affordable Healthcare act has led to more usage.
AHF is holding a Speak Out campaign to encourage Sen. Upton (Chair of Commerce and Energy Committee) to support continuance of funding at current levels. They need people to send postcards, write letters (to Upton and newspapers), volunteer, and use social media. See www.aidshealth.org. Cards to be available at Resource Center.
BUDGET REQUIREMENTS: None

● Tina Yost, attorney, running for non-partisan Family Court judgeship. Position open due to retirement of Judge Miller. Seat is on a six-year election cycle. Four candidates are currently running. Will become two at primary election and position will be filled at general election.
She is currently on the Family Law Council for the state. She has twenty years of experience in family law. She said that she is able to deal with different sides of cases and varied people. Understanding of repercussions of decisions on peoples’ lives, especially related to custody.
Issues:
Marriage currently any child of a married heteros*xual couple is legally a product of that marriage. Does not apply to homos*xual couples. Potentially could affect child support and parenting, when/whether children receive parents’ Social Security benefits.
Wording of statutes needs to be updated to be gender neutral.
Cannot take a position on partisan issues or any area that judge could potentially have to decide in court (due to legal cannon prohibition).
Holding campaign group meeting 5/23/16 at 6p at Pasche’s Lakeside (formerly H2O restaurant).
Mike Armstrong (Bob and Tom show) will be performing at a comedy show for the campaign on 6/10/16. Tickets are $35.
