Before you book a wedding videographer, ask these 7 questions.

We have spent over 5 years and filmed 300+ wedding films under the Gilded Heart Films brand since July 2021, and these are the exact things I wish more couples asked before they signed.

1. Are you a full-time studio, or is this a side hustle?

A lot of wedding videographers in Michigan are shooting weekends around a 9-to-5. That's fine, but it affects response time, availability for editing turnaround, and what happens if life gets in the way. Remember that when you're hiring just an individual over a company/studio, they are the single point of failure between you and your wedding day. Can they still cover your day in an emergency? We operate as a full-time studio, not a solo act. We have a tested and true backup system where if your main shooter cannot make it, we have already paid a second person to be on standby. 95% of other wedding video vendors do not offer this basic built in protection. No call no shows are our worst nightmare too, not just yours!

2. How many weddings have you actually filmed?

Not "how long have you had a camera." Ask for a real number. Experience shows up in how a videographer reads a room, handles bad weather, or catches a moment nobody told them was coming. If someone advertises 15 years of experience but cannot produce a comprehensive portfolio proving this experience, take it as a fib or red flag. 3. Who does your final edit, and who has final quality control?

Some studios hand your footage to a rotating cast of freelance editors with no consistent oversight, which means your film's look depends on whoever got assigned that week. We have a dedicated in-house editor, so every film has a consistent look and feel, and every single one still passes through my own final quality check before it reaches a couple. Even then, you have a free courtesy revision round if there's still changes you'd like to make.

4. What's your turnaround time?

Ask this before you sign. Many solo creatives take 4-12 months to deliver. We find that unacceptable. No one wants to wait that long for their content. Our in-house editing setup is built for speed without cutting corners, giving us one of the fastest turnaround times in the industry at an average of just 30 days!

5. Do I get the raw, unedited footage?

This is a bigger deal than people realize. Ask upfront, in writing, whether raw footage is included or a paid add-on. Most videographers will not include RAW in their standard delivery for free. We do!

6. Is your style documentary, or heavily directed and posed?

If you want your actual wedding day, not a styled reenactment of it, ask directly how they film. We're documentary-only: no shot lists, no manufactured moments, just what actually happened. A highly creative approach can create an amazing an beautiful one of a kind story, you just have to be ready to work to produce those results during your wedding.

7. What's the payment schedule and cancellation policy?

Read it before you sign it. A clear, fair contract protects both of you. Everyone has a different policy that works for them. Just make sure it makes sense for your needs too.

Booking a videographer is a bigger decision than most people expect. Ask the hard questions first.

Colton and Alyssa’s July 25th wedding in Alpena, Michigan was a perfect example of why we love filming weddings that feel personal to the couple.

From their ceremony at All Saints Catholic Parish / St. Mary Church to their private reception at a beautiful modern cabin, every part of the day felt intentional. How Much Does a Wedding Videographer Cost in Michigan? (2026 Data)

If you've started pricing out wedding videography in Michigan, you've probably noticed the number changes depending on where you look. The Knot says one thing. WeddingWire says another. Zola's number is higher than both. None of them are wrong, they're just measuring different slices of the market. Here's what each source actually reports, and what it adds up to once you're looking specifically at Michigan.

It's worth saying directly, because of how this data is actually gathered, real reported spending across tens of thousands of couples, any Michigan photographer or videographer telling you the average runs $5,000 to $10,000 is not telling you the whole story, whether that's intentional or not. That range shows up in luxury markets and in a small slice of high-end Michigan bookings, but it is not what the typical Michigan couple pays, and presenting it as the average is misleading.

What the major platforms report:

-The Knot
(Real Weddings Study) $2,300 National average, self-reported by couples after their wedding

-WeddingWire
$1,799 National average, pulled from couple-submitted review spend data

-Zola $3,993 ($3,200–$4,800 typical range) National average, weighted toward Zola's own vendor marketplace, which skews toward larger metro markets

-The Wedding Report
Michigan-specific, built from 20+ years of actual couple spending, deliberately excludes advertiser-funded platform bias See below

The spread between $1,799 and $3,993 looks wide until you notice what's driving it. WeddingWire and The Knot are pulling from a broad national pool that includes a lot of budget and DIY-adjacent bookings. Zola's number leans harder toward coastal and major-metro markets, San Francisco videographers average $6,091 in their data, Salt Lake City averages $3,005. Michigan isn't San Francisco. When you narrow Zola's own data down to Michigan cities specifically (Lansing, Michigan Center, Wolverine Lake, Marine City, and others), the local average lands much closer to $2,300 to $2,900, not the $3,993 national figure.

What Michigan-specific data shows:

The Wedding Report is built differently than the other three. Instead of pulling from one platform's own bookings, it aggregates real spending data across the industry, which is why its numbers consistently run lower than advertiser-funded platforms. For 2025, The Wedding Report puts the average Michigan wedding at $30,734 and the median at $17,344, with videography typically landing around 4.5% to 6% of total spend. Applied to a mid-range Michigan wedding budget, that works out to roughly $1,900 to $2,500 for videography specifically, which lines up closely with what Zola's own Michigan city pages show once you strip out the national inflation.

Aggregating it into one number:

Putting all four sources together, weighted toward the Michigan-specific data rather than the national averages that get quoted most often, the realistic range for a Michigan wedding videographer in 2026 is:

$1,900 to $3,000, with most couples landing between $2,300 and $2,700.

That range holds for a standard package: one videographer, 6 to 8 hours of coverage, a highlight film, ceremony and reception coverage. Prices move outside that range based on a few specific factors:
-Hours of coverage
Most packages cover 6 to 10 hours. Extra hours run $125 to $350 each.

-Second videographer
Adds $500 to $1,500 to the total, or $100 to $200 per hour.

-Drone footage
Typically a $200 to $700 add-on.

-Raw footage
If a studio includes it, expect it priced as a $150 to $550 add-on elsewhere.

-Deliverables
A short highlight reel only costs less than a highlight reel plus a full-length documentary-style film.

-Experience and demand
Newer videographers price lower to build a portfolio. Established, fully booked studios price at or above the top of the range regardless of season.

How we price at Gilded Heart Films:
We price to match the Michigan market average on purpose. Our package is $2,495, which sits right in the middle of the aggregated range above, and that's a deliberate choice, not an accident.

A lot of studios build their pricing around a specific creative art style, a signature look, a particular editing aesthetic, and price at a premium for that specialization. We don't do that. Our approach is documentary-first: we capture the day as it actually unfolds, without staging moments, directing shots, or chasing a trend-driven visual style. That approach doesn't carry the same premium a heavily stylized signature look does, and we've made peace with that trade-off on purpose.

What it buys us is consistency. Because we're not pricing around a niche creative brand, we've been able to hold the same price for years without raising it, which means the couple who books us today pays the same rate as the couple who booked us two years ago. That consistency is only possible because we operate as a full studio built for volume, not a single shooter juggling a day job, which lets us keep quality high and pricing stable at the same time.

Why the number you see online rarely matches what you'll actually pay:

Every platform above has an incentive baked into its number. The Knot and WeddingWire are showing you what couples on their platform actually spent, which includes a lot of first-year videographers pricing low to book their first weddings. Zola's marketplace leans toward higher-production studios in bigger markets. None of them are lying, they're just each one piece of the picture.

The number that actually matters is the one specific to your venue's region, your guest count, and what you actually want delivered. A couple getting married at a barn venue in mid-Michigan with a 100-person guest list and a couple getting married in downtown Detroit with 250 guests are not shopping in the same price tier, even though both are technically "Michigan weddings."

What Does a Wedding Videographer Actually Do?

A wedding videographer does a lot more than press record during the ceremony.

Long before the vows begin, a good videographer is already thinking about the story of the day. That can mean arriving early to prepare equipment, scouting the venue for the best angles and lighting, coordinating discreetly with photographers and planners, and making sure cameras, audio, batteries, and backup equipment are ready before the important moments happen. During getting ready, the goal isn't simply to document people in a room. It's to capture the atmosphere, the anticipation, the details, the interactions, and the little moments that help tell the story of how the day actually felt.

During the ceremony, the job becomes even more technical. A professional videographer is simultaneously thinking about composition, movement, exposure, audio, multiple camera angles, and what is happening both in front of and behind the camera. CJ and Lindsey's wedding day began with two very different, yet equally meaningful, settings. CJ spent the morning getting ready at the home the couple had already begun building together, while Lindsey prepared for the day at her childhood home surrounded by her parents and closest family. One of the moments that stood out most was watching Lindsey's mother help her into her wedding dress before she revealed herself to her bridesmaids, followed by an emotional reveal from the staircase to her father and brother. As a wedding filmmaker, these are the moments I look for because they tell a story beyond the wedding itself. It wasn't simply a bride getting dressed. It was a daughter leaving the home where she grew up to begin the next chapter of her life, while her family watched with equal parts excitement and emotion.

The ceremony took place at Crosspointe Church in Monroe, Michigan, where the intimate setting created a quiet and comfortable atmosphere focused entirely on the couple's commitment to one another. The church's warm tungsten lighting presented one of the more technically challenging environments for both the photography and videography teams. Years of experience filming weddings in churches with difficult lighting conditions allowed us to adapt without disrupting the ceremony, preserving the natural ambiance while still delivering clean, cinematic footage. Even with a packed schedule, there was never a sense of rushing from one event to the next. The timeline allowed the celebration to unfold naturally while ensuring every important moment was captured before guests settled in for dinner.

Dusseau's Reception Center creates a completely different atmosphere than many traditional wedding venues. Its expansive ballroom, dark finishes, centered dance floor, and bar-inspired ambiance make it an ideal setting for couples looking for a more intimate evening reception rather than a bright, airy ballroom. The low-light environment gives the space a unique character on film, but it also requires a creative team that understands how to properly expose, color, and capture movement without sacrificing image quality. From a filmmaking perspective, venues like this reward experience and preparation.

The reception itself quickly transformed into an energetic celebration. The grand entrances, speeches from the best man and maid of honor, and formal events were intentionally scheduled before dinner to make the most of the evening's timeline, while the dances followed later in the night. One particularly meaningful moment was Lindsey's dance with her mother, which was so important to her that she chose to add our separate dances film to preserve it in its entirety. As the evening continued, the DJ's elevated stage overlooked the large wooden dance floor, creating an incredible environment where guests remained engaged and the celebration carried on late into the night.

For couples considering either Crosspointe Church or Dusseau's Reception Center for their own wedding, this day highlighted how valuable thoughtful planning and an experienced creative team can be. While the multiple locations and naturally dark reception space require additional coordination, the results are well worth it when every vendor works together. Lindsey's kindness, organization, and consideration for both her guests and vendors helped create a wedding day that felt relaxed despite its complexity. Combined with a carefully planned timeline and a venue full of character, it became a celebration that was every bit as memorable on film as it was for everyone who experienced it in person.

Dusseau's Reception Center Temperance, MI

CJ & Lindsey did a June wedding right.

We started the day at the bride's childhood home in Monroe, where she came down the stairs to an overlook just for her dad; that quiet moment before anyone else saw her. Ceremony followed at Crosspointe Church, then the whole group moved to Dusseau's Reception Center in Temperance for a reception that never once felt rushed.

That's the thing about this wedding: the timeline actually flowed. Ceremony to reception, toast to dance floor, nothing crammed. It gave every vendor room to do their best work, especially the photography team working alongside us.

Lindsey added a dances edit to her package specifically for her mother-daughter dance, and watching that moment back on its own is exactly why we offer it. Her full order includes the ceremony film, raw files, and a 5-7 minute highlight film, all delivered in about a month.
