An immature reddish egret, Egretta rufescens, feels the wind on a hot summer day on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Reddish egrets were hunted almost to extinction by plume hunters in the 1800’s. This Snowy Egret was fishing along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Snowy Egrets use one foot to stir up the bottom of the water and cause fish to swim into view for hunting.

This Reddish Egret was resting on a piling on a hot summer day in the Gulf of Mexico. The Reddish Egret uses its wings to cast a shadow on the the water and help reduce glare so it can spear fish more easily. The result is a fascinating dance.

This anhinga was fishing in the marsh in Madisonville, Louisiana. The word anhinga comes from the Brazilian Tupi language and means devil bird or snake bird. A sunflower in full bloom. During growth, sunflowers tilt during the day to face the sun, but stop once they begin blooming. This tracking of the sun in young sunflower heads is called heliotropism.
