If you’ve followed me for any length of time, you probably know that Devon has never felt like just another horse show to me.
For me, Devon has always felt like coming home. Not because I grew up there, but because somewhere along the way, I became part of its story.
I’m waved at from inside the ring.
Someone inevitably appears with caffeine.
Friends stop me between rings for hugs, conversations, laughter, or a quick update on their lives.
And every year, I arrive with a camera and leave with another collection of stories that have become part of my own. I’ve watched horses take their final centerlines, celebrated first trips down the centerline, photographed engagements, milestones, new and old friendships.
But this year, Devon will mean even more.
This has been an incredibly hard year. I lost my mom. Then I lost my horse. I have had some of the hardest professional and personal days I’ve ever experienced.
I have been incredibly fortunate to be held up by my immediate family through all of it.
And as much as I know I will still be carrying some of that weight when I arrive in Devon, I also know something else: I’m going home to my horse family.
To the people who will probably hug me, hand me a coffee, make me laugh, ask about my horse, and remind me that I belong there.
And there is one particularly meaningful piece of this announcement that I’ve carried quietly for the last few months.
This was the last piece of news about my own life that I got to share with my mom before she passed away.
I remember telling her. I remember how proud she was.
I didn’t know then that it would be the last time I would get to share something like this with her. But the news itself is still mine.
It is something I worked toward, something I dreamed about, and something I am incredibly proud to finally say out loud.
So after a year that has changed so much, it feels especially good to have somewhere to go that feels familiar.
Somewhere I know I will be surrounded by people who feel like family.
Somewhere I can pick up my camera, take a deep breath, and remember why I love telling these stories in the first place.
