Gathered 🌼

When my kids were little, I always had a camera nearby.

Not because I knew these moments would matter one day, but because I never wanted to forget them.

Now they're grown, and somehow I still find myself chasing the same thing: moments that make up a life.

An afternoon at a flower farm.
Mason jars filled with wildflowers.
A sleepy farm cat.
Two sisters wandering together beneath the evening sun.

I titled this film Gathered because that's exactly what the day felt like.

Flowers gathered one stem at a time.
Moments gathered as they unfolded.
And memories gathered into something worth holding onto.

This film isn't really about flowers or the farm...

It's about time.

It's about watching your children grow up and realizing that even now, there are still moments worth gathering and keeping.

This is also the first full story film I created with Vesper, my new camera, which feels fitting somehow. A film about holding onto time, captured with a camera named for the evening hours when the day begins to slow.

I found this old video recently.

It was taken around Mother's Day in 2005.

My daughter was five years old, sitting on the swing set with her stuffed animal, singing a little song to tell me how much she loved me. Her little sister was swinging beside her.

She's 26 now.

As a photographer, I've always believed in preserving memories. But watching this reminded me that some of the things we miss most aren't things we can see.

It's the voice.

The squeak of the swing.

The she moved.

The little details of an ordinary afternoon.

The moments that seemed small at the time often become the ones we treasure most.

This is why I've become so passionate about family films.

Photographs preserve how life looked.

Video preserves how it felt. šŸ’›

One of the questions I hear most often before a session is:

"What should we wear?"

The truth is, the best outfits aren't the trendiest ones. They're the ones that allow you to move, connect, and feel like yourself.

Whether you're planning a family session, couple's session, or documentary film, what you wear can have a big impact on how your memories feel years from now.

I put together a simple guide filled with tips to help you choose clothing that photographs beautifully, moves naturally on film, and keeps the focus where it belongs: on your story.

Save this post for later and read the full blog through the link in my bio.

When we first started talking about this session, this mom mentioned that she loved photographs with a vintage feel. The kind of images that seem to exist outside of our current time.

So we chased tall grass, old fence lines, soft evening light, and all the little details that make a photograph feel like a memory.

This gallery will also be paired with a film, which feels especially fitting for a session like this, because stories are meant to move.

And while the final images look calm and dreamy, I feel obligated to report that Florida’s mosquitoes (and heat) were working overtime that evening. We survived, but only by a very narrow margin. šŸ˜‰šŸ¦Ÿ

Using a prism is one of my favorite ways to bring a little extra artistry into a session. I’m always looking for ways to create images that feel unique, layered, and full of atmosphere!

So don’t be surprised if you see me digging through my camera bag at random moments looking for prisms, glass, or little creative tools that help turn ordinary light into something more artistic. šŸ¤

Every time I see these two, it feels like no time has passed. The conversation settles in naturally, the laughter returns easily, and everything familiar is still there beneath the years, distance and growing children.

Watching them together on the beach felt a little like watching history and tenderness move through the same frame with a great sense of familiarity. It's the kind of connection that softens life.

I’m endlessly grateful for the people who stay woven into our lives no matter how many miles or seasons exist between us. šŸ¤

Clearwater Beach gave us an evening filled with cool toned softness, birds overhead, warm water around our ankles, and just enough wind to make everything feel alive.

And if you’ve ever wondered whether what you wear truly matters in your session, this is proof. Their warm, earthy tones against the cool blues of the sky and shoreline created such a beautiful balance that everything felt cinematic without trying too hard.

Self doubt is such a strange part of creating.

You can spend hours convinced you failed to translate what it felt like… then one image quietly reminds you why you started in the first place.

I think a lot of photographers carry this invisible tug-of-war between instinct and overthinking. Wanting the work to feel honest while questioning every choice along the way.

The hard part is that growth rarely feels confident while it’s happening. Sometimes it looks like second guessing every edit, stepping away from the screen multiple times, coming back again and again, and learning to trust your own eye anyway.

I have one of my favorite reminders on a sticky note on my desk; it's: you can’t control the wave, but you can learn to ride it.

Maybe creating is a little like that too.

Eventually you realize the work that connects most deeply was never created from perfection. It came from paying attention. From feeling something. From trusting yourself enough to keep going.✨

For a long time, family photography taught people to chase stillness. You know, the perfect smiles, perfect behavior.... perfect clothing. Everyone looking at the camera at the exact same moment and giving the best performed smile.

But some of the moments we end up treasuring most were never perfectly still at all.

Laughter while walking on the edge of the tall grass. A child reaching for a parent’s hand. Wind tangled hair. Sand on bare feet. The way a season of life actually felt.

That’s a large part of why I approach sessions the way I do. I want families to have room to move, play, breathe, and simply be together without feeling like every second needs to be posed or performed.

I wrote a new journal entry about what storytelling family sessions really feel like, why documentary inspired sessions matters so deeply to me, and the heart behind the way I photograph families here along the Gulf coast.

I’ll place the link in the comments below šŸŒ™

There’s something about watching generations move together that makes time feel visible. Barefoot children running toward the waves, grandparents laughing in the background, parents soaking in the kind of evening they’ll wish they could step back into years from now.

This is why family films matter so much to me. Because I want to give you something that not only freezes a moment, but something that holds onto the movement within it. I want to give you something that will quickly become a part of your family history.

* Extended family beach film at sunset along the Gulf Coast of Florida. *
Captured with a documentary approach and guided gently by connection, movement, and real moments.
