Did you know that Norway has over 1200 tunnels? I’m sure we drove through at least 75-100 of them. Most cut through mountains. Several under the sea. (Fjords). Most are not wide enough to meet a larger vehicle side by side. Some only wide enough for a single car. There are periodic pull outs inside each tunnel for one vehicle to pull over when cars meet. More than once, I had to back up. We drove through one that was under construction under a fjord. (Being widened). The water leaking into the tunnel added to the experience, knowing that we were beneath the ocean.

I thought I would share something a bit different today. We didn’t see a lot of wildlife in Norway. (A few caribou in the distance.). But we did see a fair amount of bird life. These images were taken from an old fishing boat near Bleik, where a colony of 160,000 puffins nest on a small island. They nest under ground to avoid predators. This time of year, they are just arriving and will start laying eggs soon. They don’t spend much time on land until they have to as they are safer in the water. The eagles are anxiously awaiting nesting season as they prey on the adults. We saw many sea eagles.

There are so many wondrous places to explore in this world. Places far from big cities and the noisy chaos of modern day society. Places where you can breathe deeply and still get lost in the sounds of waves, birds and waterfalls. Places where natures pace is as it has always been. The Arctic coast of Norway is one such place. I am glad that I brought my drone along to Norway. It adds a different viewpoint to this incredible place.

I am amazed at how quickly spring comes to the coastal mountains of Arctic Norway. The 24 hours of daylight seems to turn the mountains green in a matter of moments. Have a wonder-filled day.
