my 10th half marathon, 10 years after my first

i started running half marathons in college because i felt a little lost without my team.

a lot has changed since then. apparently my idea of a fun sunday has not.

Nothing like chasing big goals alongside thousands of other runners through Portland

Thank you Eddie Bauer Adventure Club for sponsoring the Portland Marathon and helping create opportunities that bring people together outside.

I’m so grateful I got to be part of this one!

40 running miles. 25 backpacking miles. Two strength sessions. And one planned run I intentionally skipped

This week reminded me that marathon training doesn’t happen in a vacuum.
Especially when I’m also trying to make room for the outdoor adventures that make me happiest.

The wins:

Goal pace felt controlled. Wednesday’s 1K repeats also doubled as my first real speed test in the CEP Optaspeed BowTech shoes

90 grams of carbs per hour went down easily.

My legs handled a lot of time on feet.

The adjustment:

After 25 backpacking miles, 5,800 feet of elevation gain and more loose volcanic terrain and glacier-field travel than expected, I skipped my planned eight-mile Sunday run.

Chasing sub-3:20 is partly about completing the work, and partly about knowing when more work won’t make me fitter.

Would you have run the eight miles anyway?
And how do you find balance between your hiking and running goals?
