I’ve never been ready to post a collection of my favorite photos on World Photography Day, but I’m almost always ready to post baby bears 💫

Today I decided to look up the World Photography Day origins, did you know that Aug 19 marks the date in 1839 when the French government purchased the patent for the daguerreotype photographic process (the first successful form of photography) and declared it a “free gift to the world”.

Ah yes, what a beautiful gift 📸

A couple of meteors landed right where I wanted them, and it was maybe the first time that’s ever happened while photographing them 💫

After driving up to the peak of that mountain in the photo and seeing that the parking lot was entirely full and there were people everywhere (which is great, I love that people are out enjoying a meteor shower, just not the vibe I was going for last night), I almost gave up and turned around to drive home.

Instead, I found a spot along the lake that I had all to myself and had a peaceful, beautiful evening watching meteors shoot across the sky. I’m so happy to have captured a few of them :)

After so many of you requested more baby bears (one person to be exact), I just couldn’t wait to share more :)

The coastal brown bears of Katmai and Lake Clark National Parks spend low tide digging for clams, an important part of their diet. After watching them for a couple of hours, it was fascinating to see just how efficient some of them are at finding & devouring them.

I think this little one picked up a shell that mom had discarded to see if there was anything good left!

They’re so gosh darn cute 🥹

I *almost* missed out on baby bears this year!

I was supposed to be flying to King Salmon today (in fact, I’d be in the air right now) for a backcountry camping trip in Katmai with some of my bear friends. Those plans changed and I had to cancel the trip, so when Megan told me that Goat Mountain Air had a couple seats open on a day trip to Lake Clark, I jumped at the chance.

The day gave us a little bit of everything… fog, wind, sunshine, and the cutest little bear cubs 🐻

I’m incredibly grateful I still got my bear fix this year 💛

We heard them before we saw them. A pod of at least 10 orcas moved through the thick fog surrounding our boat, appearing and disappearing into the mist. Visibility was, at times, almost nonexistent, making the encounter feel even more surreal. They stayed with us for nearly 20 minutes, and it’s a moment I’ll never forget. 🖤🖤🖤

Sending my sincere apologies to this Pelican Products case 🙃

I spent the afternoon covering it in dust, tossing it in a lake, and knocking it off a log... all in the name of science.

The good news? The new Next-Gen Protector case didn’t seem to mind at all.

As someone who’s constantly hauling camera gear into the mountains, across lakes, and through whatever the weather decides to do that day, having a case that’s built for abuse is a pretty big deal.

The Next-Gen Protector is 12% stronger than the previous generation and ready for just about anything you can throw at it... or throw it at.

Lately when I’ve been feeling overwhelmed, I walk out to my garden and look for jumping spiders. My raspberry bush almost always delivers, but today it was a sunflower that was the home to the most stunning lil cutie spider!

Finger for scale in the last pic, this was a tiny tiny golden jumper 💛

One of the things I hope to share is that you don’t have to travel across the world to find something beautiful. Sure, there’s beauty everywhere, but there’s also beauty right where you are, in this exact moment.

I travel for photos sometimes, but I never want to feel like I have to, or make anyone else feel like they have to.

There’s this idea that beauty only exists in distant places, and I think that does a disservice to everything close to home. The truth is, there’s so much worth noticing, right in your own backyard.
