Big excitement here in the Pittsburgh area as the Union Pacific Big Boy steam locomotive made its way through southwestern Pennsylvania as part of America's 250th Anniversary celebration.

I chose this viewing spot in Wilmerding as it has significance to railroad history. The building in the back is the machine shop for the former Westinghouse Air Brake Company. Westinghouse air brakes were installed on millions on rail cars manufactured throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.

-Clairton Mill Buildings-

U.S. Steel's Clairton Coke Works was once a fully integrated steel mill with blast furnaces and rolling mills. According to the 1915 Sanborn Fire Insurance Map of Clairton, the brick building on the left side of this image was the 22" mill building.

The two steel sided buildings in the center of the frame were constructed at a later date. They do not appear on the Sanborn map, and the area they are located in is identified as a crane runway on said map.

The addition of some giant googly eyes to the bucket of this Thew Type-O shovel (actually named the Amy Kathleen) make it resemble the character Mary Anne from the famous children's book Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel.
