-Marianna Mine 58 #4-

The Bath House at Marianna Mine 58, along with a neat sign and Ford tractor.

When I was about to leave, there was a gentleman running a weedwhacker and trimming around a nearby fence. I approached him and asked if I could take a few pictures of the building here. It turns out he is the Marianna Borough Council Vice President, and to my surprise he said you can even go inside if you want! So thanks Scott for letting me get some more detailed shots of this building. Sadly my camera battery was dying so I didn't get that many, but I also had a film camera with me, so I got a few more frames that I can share once I get those developed.

-Marianna Mine 58 #3-

Two original mine buildings at Marianna. The building on the right was split into two sections according to the historic mine maps. The end of the building facing the camera is identified as a Machine Shop, and the opposite end of the building is the No. 2 Engine House. The building on the left in the background is the Bath House.

A water plant on the mine property. This building does not appear on any detailed Marianna Mine map that I can find, so it is newer construction, relatively speaking.

-Marianna Mine 58 #1-

Marianna Mine was started by the Pittsburgh and Buffalo Company in the early 20th century. It later came under ownership of Bethlehem Steel until its closure due to a fire in the late 1980s.

Shown here are some of the coke ovens at Marianna. Coal from the mine was cleaned and sent to these nearby ovens to be turned into coke for the steelmaking process. The ovens here are in remarkable shape for their age, unlike many other old coke ovens in the area.

I took this picture from the public walking trail; I was not dressed properly for dealing with the tick-infested Pennsylvania woods. I plan to return in the winter explore these more closely.

-Marianna Arcade-

It took a bit of research to confirm what this building was. I went first to the trusty PA Mine Map Atlas. A 1931 mine map from the Bethlehem Mines Corp. labels this building as the Arcade. Seemed simple enough, but then an online search of Marianna Arcade reveals a historic photo from July 4 1910 for the dedication of the structure. However, the building in the historic photo looks nothing like the building pictured here. https://www.facebook.com/groups/280906681935191/posts/2282346098457896/

Eventually, I found an article from the November 10, 1910 edition of the Monongahela Daily Republican indicating that the building was completely destroyed by a fire on November 9, 1910. https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-daily-herald-marianna-arcade/205104264/

It seems the Arcade was rebuilt at some point after the fire, given continued references to the Marianna Arcade and Marianna Arcade Theater in later issues of the Daily Republican (and several post-1910 mine maps).

Talking with a local, there is an abandoned movie theater in this building, along with a bowling alley on the lower floor that is still in operation and run by a private social club, the Marianna Lyceum.

-SS. Mary & Ann-

Saints Mary and Ann Church, Marianna, Pennsylvania. The Diocese of Pittsburgh indicates that this church building was dedicated on July 4th, 1913. This parish merged with St. Michael the Archangel in Fredericktown to from St. Oliver Plunkett parish in 1994, then later merged with other local parishes to become part of St. Katherine Drexel parish in 2017.

This church building was closed by the Diocese in 2019. Currently, it is home to Marianna Christian Outreach, a mission of Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church.

The Big Boy's arrival to Wilmerding was delayed as the 25G (pictured here) caught up to them and was given the right of way to pass. The crowd gave an enthusiastic welcome to the crew as they rolled by.
