Flashback to 4 years ago. It was on this day at Overpeck Park that my photography went from being a hobby to a freelance job. I went to take photos of sunset. For myself. A stranger came up to me and asked what I was taking photos for. I told her I wasn’t taking them for anything, they were just for me. For fun. She asked if she could see some of the photos I took and to be honest, I was a bit taken aback. I didn’t know this person and couldn’t understand why she would want to see my photos on the back of my camera.

For some reason I am still unsure of, I showed her a few of my favorites (this photo being one of them). She commented on how she thought the photos were wonderful. Then she turned to me and said “you know, I’m not good with technology and social media. But you’re young, I’m sure you know and even if not you can probably figure it out. Why don’t you make a page and post your photos. You never know where it can take you.”

That night I couldn’t stop thinking about her and what she said. I set up an Instagram account and a page and I posted a few photos. I didn’t think anyone would care and I thought I probably would close the accounts in a few days, but I guess it couldn’t hurt to just post something and see. That very same weekend my first few clients reached out and asked if I did family shoots. And that’s how my photography business started.

I’ve come a long way and I still have a long way to go. I’ve learned so much and have improved on my skill. I’m self taught - I’ve never taken a photography class. There’s been a lot of trial and error. But it’s all brought me to where I am as a photographer today, and for that I am beyond grateful. Thank you to my clients and followers for sharing in this journey with me. ❤️
