“I’m suing the CIA” were the last words I expected to hear out of my client's mouth after asking… “So, what brings you in for new headshots today?” But, that’s exactly what she did. And I’m honored to have aided her in (an extremely small part) of her story….
At the time when I took Rachel’s portraits, she wasn’t sure when or even IF she would ever come forth publicly with her extraordinary story, but as she shared it with me as we worked through our photo session, I was compelled to capture her portraits in a way that conveyed her bravery and her strength in hopes of helping portray what she had endured over the past few years.
It felt as if… in some small way, I was taking portraits of every woman who has been assaulted. It felt like by capturing photos of her, I was giving a voice to so many women who have been silenced.
Rachel is one of the strongest women I’ve ever met. She was assaulted while in training to become a CIA agent, and when she informed her bosses of what occurred, they told her “let us know if he does it again” and ostensibly brushed it under the rug… So she sued them.
In this digital age, image is everything. Rachel knew she needed to be proactive about what photos would be used if word got out. While all of this was happening, she was also testifying behind closed doors to congress who worked tirelessly to pass legislation protecting whistle blowers like her from ever enduring what she went through.
Rachel, the ball is in your court. The wind is in your sails. The COUNTRY is standing at your back ready to support you, and fight with you to shine a light on the kind of injustice women globally face every day.
We salute you, for NEVER thinking this was your fault. We salute you for doing the hard work, making the hard choices, and doing what’s right. You are a true American hero.
