VINTAGE WORKS / CONTEMPORARY WORKS, LTD. AND DUE SANTI PUBLISHING, INC. PRESENT THOMAS SHILLEA AT THE PHOTOGRAPHY SHOW PRESENTED BY AIPAD
Vintage Works / Contemporary Works, Ltd., and Due Santi Publishing, Inc., are pleased to announce the North American launch of Thomas Shillea’s new book, ‘L’Exposition—Classical to Experimental Photographs’. The publication and accompanying exhibition of the noted American photographer will take place at the leading and longest running art fair devoted exclusively to the medium of photography, The Photography Show presented by AIPAD. Returning to its historic host venue, the Park Avenue Armory on New York City’s Upper East Side from April 26 to 28, 2024, the traditional vernissage will take place one day earlier on April 25 for press, sponsors, and VIPs. A book signing is scheduled on Friday, April 26 from 1pm to 4pm.
Visitors to Vintage Works / Contemporary Works, Ltd., booth C64, will be treated to an exclusive installation of Shillea's versatile photographic portfolio as curated by his dealer, Alex Novak. The limited edition publication ‘L’Exposition’, features 41 carefully selected plates that encapsulate over four decades of Shillea’s pioneering work, blending traditional photographic techniques with cutting-edge experimental processes. Alex Novak emphasized, “Shillea’s oeuvre is a testament to the fair’s theme, bridging a remarkable spectrum from the 19th to the 21st century. His methods range from using a century-old view camera to creating camera-less digital images, asserting his status as a versatile and pioneering figure in contemporary photography.” Shillea's work is known for its exploration of complex social themes, addressing the intricacies of identity through various lenses such as gender, race, and religion. Shillea’s work was well received at his inaugural showing in Europe at the 2023 Paris Photo Fair last November. His limited edition book was launched in Europe prior to US launch and his wall of works sold out.
In addition to presenting Shillea’s work, a pantheon of American, British, and French photography legends the likes of Eùgene Atget, Walker Evans, Brassaï, Julia Margaret Cameron, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Imogen Cunningham, Irving Penn, Man Ray, and many other highly collected artists’ works will be available.
With a rich history in the photography market, Alex Novak is a luminary with over 45 years of experience and more than 5000 photographs in inventory. His profound influence is evidenced by his authoritative E- Photo Newsletter and significant publications, alongside his foundational role in esteemed institutions within the art community such as the J. Paul Getty Museum’s photography council, the Daguerreian Society, the American Photographic Historical Society,
and a stalwart member of The Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD).
A film biography produced by SBFA of the life and work of ‘Thomas Shillea, Upside Down and Backwards’ is currently in post-production. Santa Bannon, Director of Due Santi Publishing, INC., is set to publish a comprehensive monograph of Shillea's view camera work, with the same title, to be released November 2024 at the next edition of Paris Photo.
