The iconography of Christianity can be awe-inspiring, like this statue of Madonna degli Angeli atop the Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli in Assisi, the seventh largest Christian church in the world.

It was here that the young Francis of Assisi understood his vocation and renounced the world in order to live in poverty among the poor, and thus started the Franciscan movement.

I hope the point is not lost... a priceless, 24 kt. gold-plated statue stands over the place where San Francesco renounced material possessions.

Amid all the activity and the sometimes sadly unmet expectations that come with this season, may we each find the still point around which our whirling world revolves, that place of peace and oneness with all creation.

La Niña, a replica of one of Cristobal Colon's ships from his first voyage to the West Indies in 1492, approaches a wharf in the Brunswick (Georgia) River.

The formal name of La Niña was the Santa Clara, but she was commonly called by her nickname which was probably a pun on the name of her owner, Juan Niño of Moguer. She was a small vessel--approximately 50 feet in length--and was designed for operation as a trade ship in Mediterranean coastal waters, not the open ocean.

Earlier in the day that I captured this image, La Niña, which has a 7-foot draft, was stranded in front of my house on the Jekyll River which has a depth of no more than four feet at low tide. The U.S. Coast Guard pulled her free from the mud.
