I can barely contain my excitement for this post!!! I have been trying for *years* to capture a photo of a Ghost Pipe that does it even the slightest justice and, without further ado, here she is.

Here’s a few facts on the Ghost Plant because, if you ask me, they are pretty ghoul (sorry, not sorry):

▫️Scientific name: Monotropa uniflora
▫️ Surprisingly enough, these are not mushrooms but perennial wildflowers.
▫️ Slightly similar to mushrooms though, these plants get their nutrients through parasitism from the roots of trees (Ghost plants favor live ones where mushrooms favor decomposing ones)
▫️The translucent white coloring is due to a lack of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is normally produced through photosynthesis and gives plants their green color.
▫️Ghost Plants only appear above ground for one week out of the year. The remaining 51 weeks are spent underground.

Next time you go on a hike, keep an eye out for clusters of these in dark, damp spaces. I will never forget the first time I found one. They really are unique - I even thought I discovered a new species 😂
