Why is it important to photograph dancers?
Aside from the joy the beauty of the images offer to viewers, here is what you need to understand.
Dancing is hard.
It is a commitment that takes up all of your time, thought, energy, and strength. The more you love it the more you give of yourself to it. The more talented you become the more addicted you are to be even more perfect. Outside sources try to push you down or simply don’t appreciate why you are so dedicated to it, but undeterred you keep showing up for yourself. Fatigue, injury, and sometimes physical limitations can cause many to lose their way or quit but for those who stay, fulfillment and progress continue. Some other battles a dancer may face are jealousy, shaming, competition, and eating disorders. Social media has now added another level of its expectation and criticism. Dancers keep warming up, stretching, pushing their limits, and discovering they get do what they once thought was impossible. But how can this lifetime of work be celebrated? Presented ? Photography and film is the answer. However now that artist, the dancer, is depending on another artist to capture then safely, correctly, and beautifully. The responsibility to be trained in this sport to do it justice is that of each photographer who picks up a camera to create a still of dancer. To dancers at every level I say keep going. To photographers I say learn this craft as a specialty. Learn the deeper knowledge to do it right not once but every time. Need help? That is why I am here. If you would like to know where and when I’ll be teaching my next workshop make sure you follow me and check my website for an updated schedule.
