What happens after you rescue a child?
That question is at the heart of our newest episode of the 5Nine Creative Podcast, recorded on location in Western Kenya with Dr. Steven Owuor.
What began at Mescals Children’s Center of Hope as a vision to rescue vulnerable children has grown into so much more—a children’s home, a Christian school, community outreach, and now the construction of a new senior high school. But as Steven shares in this conversation, the goal has never been simply to meet a need.
It’s about helping children discover their God-given value and purpose and giving them the opportunity to become leaders, professionals, and ambassadors for Christ.
We talk about why lasting ministry requires deep roots, how the Gospel brings transformation beyond someone’s immediate circumstances, and why helping a community means empowering people to become givers—not simply receivers.
Steven also shares the incredible story of Repha, who came to Mescals at just five years old after losing her mother and experiencing tremendous trauma. Today, she’s a bright, thriving student who recently placed first in a regional science competition and advanced to the national level.
Her story is just one example of what can happen when rescue becomes opportunity, purpose, and hope.
And maybe one of our favorite ideas from this conversation is this: Mescals isn’t simply a story of need. It’s a story of success. It’s a story of what God can do when someone is faithful enough to plant a seed, build deep roots, and trust Him with what comes next.
