Summer in Western North Carolina has been relentless lately, and even wildlife feels it. This Red-shouldered Hawk sat panting in the afternoon heat, using rapid breathing to regulate body temperature.

What caught my attention wasn’t just the hawk—but the quiet tension nearby. A hare remained within view, creating one of those raw moments nature doesn’t announce with sound, only presence.

Predator. Prey. Heat. Patience.

Sometimes the wild reminds us that survival isn’t always about movement—sometimes it’s about knowing when to wait.
