Week 21 Prompt: Into the Forest - a little long but true ...
I kept returning to the story of my grandfather, who lived in the Black Forest before eventually coming to Yankton, South Dakota. My best guess is that this story reaches back to the 1880s.
The story goes that he was in the forest with a team of horses when he was suddenly chased and shot at by German Bandits men who mistook him for someone else. In the chaos, one of his horses was struck with a bout of diarrhea and came to an abrupt halt. That unexpected stop may have saved his life. The men realized they were firing at the wrong person, and the danger dissolved as quickly as it had begun.
This image — my version of him, now with a single horse — is how I imagine the moment after. The Black Forest quiet again. The air still. Peace settling in after the storm.
