First test shoot with the Zf and the Nokton 50mm f/1.0. While the model was uncooperative and fidgety the whole time, I’m stoked with how well the manual focus assistance features of this camera work, and how beautifully this lens renders. Shot wide open, it’s got the most pleasing amount of softness to it, and it’s scalpel sharp by f2. And the Fz just feels so nice to shoot with. It’s a slower, more deliberate way of shooting, and I’m loving that.

I dusted off my Sigma dp3 Quattro for the first time in a few months yesterday and realized I had a few photos on the card that I’d never offloaded from the spring. This camera’s a goofy, finicky pain in the ass to work with, but the way it renders black and white is hard to beat. I’ve really been feeling black and white lately.

Turns out my yard is something of an urban wildlife sanctuary. Pretty much all night, every night, something’s out there setting my cameras off. To date, I think I’ve ticked off just about everything in the backyard wildlife checklist for my area. Squirrels, chipmunks, deer, raccoons, opossums, skunks, groundhogs, foxes, and plenty of feral cats. Just need a bear and a coyote and I think that completes the set. Big change coming from a 3rd floor one bedroom apartment. Anyway, all that kinda had me impulse buy a better wildlife lens. This is just some of the cardinals that were in my backyard while I was testing it out.

Charged up my Sigma dp3 Quattro for the first time in a while this past weekend. Forgot how much I like that goofy little camera, and the incredible level of detail it’s capable of capturing. It’s a pain in the ass to use, very finicky with lighting, and their software is garbage, but it’s worth it. I’ve been waiting years for them to release their full frame Foveon mirrorless…maybe someday.

These are some pink oyster mushrooms I’ve been growing. They make interesting subjects for macro photos, and as a bonus they’re damn tasty.

Probably about time I dusted off my Instagram account, right? At the end of 2021, I mentioned how I’d barely picked up a camera that year, and promised myself that 2022 wasn’t going to be a repeat. I failed spectacularly. A one month break turned into two, three, six…now here I am, nearly a year and a half later.

I still love landscape and nature photography…but my interests have expanded over this time and my idea of “what I like to shoot” has shifted. Really, it’s been a year of change for me. Lots of endings and beginnings. So I’ve decided to let my artistic pursuits follow that change and become less structured.

I took these during a video shoot with .studio.music this past weekend. They’re loosely composed, a bit dark, and grainy (not that you can really tell on a phone screen). And I really don’t care. I like ‘em anyway.

This past year, I barely picked up a camera aside from one trip during the brief window in the fall when things weren’t completely crazy around here. Ive been less creative and less driven to course correct. I’ve made a promise to myself that 2022 isn’t going to be a repeat of 2021.
