Go Falcon Heavy!
Psyche is on its way to
The metal-rich world!

NASA’s Psyche probe launched this morning, Oct. 13, at 10:19 am EDT, on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Launch Complex-39A, at the Kennedy Space Center, in Florida. The spacecraft is headed to a metal asteroid, also named Psyche, which researchers believe could be the discarded core on an ancient dead planet. The probe won’t arrive until 2029, and has a 2.2 billion mile journey ahead of it.

Without a doubt the best remote camera shot I’ve gotten to date. Zoom in to see the Russian characters designating the RD-181 rocket engines, the last pair to launch an Antares rocket.

Supply lines for the rocket’s Ukrainian-built first stage and Russian RD-181 engines were cut off at the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukrainian. Moving forward, Northrop Grumman has announced a deal with Firefly Aerospace to manufacture a new first stage and engines for the still-to-be-named Antares rocket, which is expected to launch no earlier than Sumer 2025.

If NASA doesn't come up with a tighter budget for the mission, Mars Sample Return may not happen.

Two night ago I watched the station complete a very unique pass over Bloomington. Its path cut directly through Polaris, the North Star, which is sitting above the Monroe County courthouse, anchored as the center around which all the star trails are circling.

This type of intersect is rare, and only happens when the perceived elevation angle of the space station’s orbit matches with the angular elevation of Polaris.

The station was visible for nearly five minutes during this pass, with the first three captured and stacked into this photo with some added time for the star trails. Info below, but first a haiku:
