As a whale guide I talk about these mammals for hours: migration, anatomy, diet, psychology, reproduction, communication, emotional intelligence, threats, conservation. But in the presence of a breeching calf? I have no words— silent or squealing, no in between. Giddy awe we’ll call it.

Mycena Aurantiidisca: a tiny orange mushroom us humans don’t know much about.

What we do know is she appears to enjoy the pine needles and moss that carpet this temperate rainforest floor.

In that aspect we are quite similar.

Scientists have also observed that her species recovers quickly from disturbances. And being that she is a mushroom and therefore more closely related to us humans than the plants she grew next to, I’d like to think we also share her virtue of resiliency. If only we could measure up to that cuteness. you measure up ✨🫶🍄‍🟫

Humpback whales are protected under the marine mammal protection act. It is unlawful to approach humpbacks whales within 100 yards. If they are within that range it is because the whale approached our vessel. 🐋 💛
