Emily and Eric’s wedding in Chicago was built on connection. Family was woven through every moment, from the speeches that had everyone laughing and crying to Emily’s dad taking the saxophone stage more than once, keeping the energy alive and reminding everyone that joy is contagious.
The morning unfolded in two spaces. Emily, her mom, and her bridesmaids gathered at Emily’s condo in Chicago. Chic, intimate, close to everything. Meanwhile, Eric and the groomsmen started their day with a dip in the lake before heading to the Gwen Hotel, where they’d shower, dress in their tuxes, and keep the celebration rolling.
There was something especially meaningful about photographing Emily on her wedding day. She’s spent mornings behind the camera with us at other Chicago weddings, assisting and observing. Seeing her genuine reactions, her joy, her way of living so completely in the moment, shifted something. Emily doesn’t perform happiness. She lives it. And watching that unfold in front of the lens, knowing her story and her heart, made this day feel different. She’s the kind of person you want to take with you everywhere.
Then came the second line. They brought New Orleans to Chicago, and it was glorious. Umbrellas, music, an entire procession from cocktail hour straight into the reception. And when they returned to the dance floor in their outfit change, their friends rushed toward them completely. That’s when you see it clearly: this couple is so deeply loved.
The Ivy Room became a vessel for something real that day. A small wedding venue in Chicago that witnessed a family celebrating two people choosing each other, surrounded by the people who matter most.
