Michael, 49
The “Village Blacksmith.” Former “Village Drunken Fighting Idiot”
Been in Montana for 22 years
What do you like about living in Montana?
The people. If you were to follow me around town you’d find the most solid people.
Are you happy?
Excellently, yes. I am living my dream.
What does happiness mean to you?
“It means being able to get up in the morning man, and make a scientific wild ass guess: Either go fishing or go to work. Go hunting, or go help your buddy work on something man. You don't have to ask for a woman's permission. You don't have to ask your boss's permission. Freedom. Yeah, man. You follow your own thing.
The next one is what's your biggest regret?
“My daughter, man. I chose an oil rig over her. She lives right in the valley, she's a senior. I'd come back, I'd work a month on and get two weeks off. So, I’d come back here and I’d see her for a weekend and then I was sitting here. I mean, you get two weeks off. Come back to Livingston, Montana, you got a stack full of cash like that after being on an oil rig. That's a recipe for disaster! Haha”
Do you think people are inherently good or bad?
“Good. Because every man has the ability to choose good or evil. If I was to tell you, ‘hey, man, I want you to go over to that truck, take any tool you want, smash that window, and take whatever you want. Inherently, does that bring up some red flags? And why am I being told to do that? No, I can't do that. We can't do that. The world is as simple as that.”
What do you wish you had more of?
“Time. Like I said, I was just turning 49, and I remember getting late in high school like it was yesterday, and I’m like ‘what the f**k happened’ you know what I mean? A blink of an eye brother. I heard it from a poet warrior: ‘Brief is this fleeting life.’ Pretty heavy man! Something you’d expect Yoda to say!”
