I spend most of my workday photographing newborns in Boise.

Tiny hands. Sleepy faces. Parents who are still in that very beginning stage where the days somehow feel both incredibly long and way too fast.

Then I look at my own boys.

Most days they go from school straight to gymnastics, get home around 8:30, eat, sleep, and do it all over again. Somewhere in between all of that there are Nerf wars, wrestling matches, and a lot of launching themselves at each other for reasons I will never fully understand.

I barely see them during the week, which is probably why they seem to get bigger between sightings.

There’s something strange about being a newborn photographer and spending so much time documenting the very beginning for other families while watching my own kids move farther and farther away from it.

I think that’s part of why I care so much about photographing these stages in the first place. You don’t always notice the change while it’s happening.

Sometimes you just look up and realize it already did.

I know how easy it is to look at yourself postpartum and think, Maybe later.

When your body feels more familiar.
When you’ve had more sleep.
When you feel less tired.
When you’re “back to yourself.”

But you don’t have to wait for that.

As a mom myself, I know how uncomfortable it can feel to be photographed when you’re postpartum. That’s why I want you to know that everything you need for your newborn session is provided in the studio. You don’t need to figure out what to wear or show up looking a certain way.

We’ll guide you through the session, help you with posing, and make sure you have space to feed, hold, soothe, or take a break whenever you need to.

Because the goal isn’t for you to look like you’ve already bounced back.

It’s to photograph you and your baby, exactly as you are in this season.

Your baby won’t remember whether you felt camera-ready. They’ll just see their mom holding them.

You belong in these photos now.

If you’re planning a newborn session in Boise, send me a message and let’s talk.

I remember when my first son became a big brother.

I remember looking at him with the baby and thinking, “Wait. How is he old enough to be the big brother?”

It’s such a strange transition as a parent. One day they’re your baby, and the next they’re standing there holding an actual baby.

I think that’s probably why I love sibling photos so much.

I’ve been on both sides of it now. I’ve watched my own boys become brothers, and I’ve photographed so many families going through that same transition as a newborn photographer.

And every family does it a little differently.

Some older siblings are completely fascinated by the baby. Some want to hold them immediately. Some are more interested in what’s happening around them.

And some are basically thinking, “Okay, how long do I have to do this?”

Which is exactly why I don’t expect these moments to look perfect.

I just want to give them the space to interact and be ready when something real happens.

Because years later, you’re probably not going to care whether everyone was looking at the camera.

You’re going to want to remember what your kids looked like together.

That’s one of my favorite parts of newborn photography in Boise. Capturing those sibling moments as they actually happen.

Newborn mugshots are one of my favorite parts of every session.

Newborns make some of the absolute best faces, and the timing is perfect right when they arrive. He’s just had a car ride, a diaper change, a change of clothes, and he’s usually wide awake wondering what exactly we’re about to do to him.

So before I even try to settle him, I take advantage of it.

We get the suspicious face. The offended face. The tiny old man face. The one that looks like he’s already deeply disappointed in all of us.

Then once we’ve documented the full range of newborn opinions, we settle him in and move on to the sleepy, posed photos.

I love the beautiful newborn portraits, obviously. But these are the ones that show just how much personality was already there from the very beginning.

I was trying to remember what my boys’ hands looked like when they were newborns the other day.

And I couldn’t.

I remember holding them. I remember the middle-of-the-night feeds. I remember plenty of ridiculous things they did as they got older.

But the exact shape of those tiny fingers? Gone.

That’s the weird thing about having kids. You don’t forget them. You just slowly lose some of the details.

How they sat with their legs tucked underneath them. That one particular smile. The way their hair stuck up. The face they made right before they started laughing.

I see it all the time photographing newborns and families here in Boise. A baby changes so much that sometimes parents come back to see their newborn photos a week later and immediately say, “They already look different.”

So yes, take the picture.

Not because every Tuesday afternoon needs to become a professional photo session.

Just because your brain is apparently very selective about what it plans to keep.

After photographing newborn families in Boise for a long time, dads are one of the things I’ve come to really appreciate.

They don’t always know what to do in front of the camera, but once you hand them the baby, they usually stop thinking about the camera altogether.

They rock them.
They adjust their little hat.
They check their face.
They make some ridiculous noise that somehow gets a reaction.

And I just let them do their thing.

Those little interactions are often the photos that end up meaning the most.

Not because everyone was perfectly posed, but because it actually looks like them.

That’s what I want when I photograph a family. Not a picture of a dad posing with his baby.

A picture of Dad being Dad.

Photographers and parents don't always choose the same photos.

As photographers, we're trained to notice everything.

The light.

The pose.

The tiny details we'd tweak if we could.

Meanwhile, mom is looking at the exact same image and seeing something completely different.

Maybe I'm thinking,

"He's a little uplit."

And she's thinking,

"Look at that little smirk."

Or,

"That's exactly the face he makes when he sleeps."

Over the years, I've learned that my favorite image and a parent's favorite image are often two very different things.

And that's exactly why I don't choose for them.

I know some people wonder why we bring families back to view their images instead of simply sending a gallery full of hundreds of photos.

The truth is that choosing images is harder than it sounds.

You need to see them side by side.

You need to compare them.

You need to figure out why one image makes you smile and another one - while beautiful - just doesn’t bring the same joy to your heart.

Because when you're looking at 200 images, they all start to blur together.

But when you've narrowed it down to the handful that truly matter?

Those are the ones you remember.

Those are the ones that end up on walls, in albums, and becoming part of your family's story.

Because these photos aren't being created for photographers.

They're being created for families.

The image I think belongs in a portfolio isn't always the image that belongs above your fireplace.

And that's okay.

In fact, that's kind of the point.

What do I make as a newborn photographer?

Sure, I make photographs.

But after years of photographing newborn families, I’ve realized that the photographs are only part of it.

I make room for feeding breaks, diaper changes, and the fact that babies don’t particularly care about our timeline.

I make parents feel comfortable enough to actually get in the photos.

I make space for siblings, grandparents, and all the little interactions that happen when a new baby joins the family.

And I make the whole experience feel a little easier.

Because you already have enough to think about when you bring a newborn into the world. You shouldn’t have to figure out what to do in front of a camera, too.

That’s my job.

You bring the baby. I’ll take care of the rest.

Postpartum is such a strange little window of time.

I’ve been through it three times, and I still remember how much of an adjustment those first weeks can be.

You’re exhausted. Your body feels different. Your days revolve around feeding, naps, and figuring out what this particular baby needs. And somewhere in the middle of all of that, you’re also trying to figure out who you are now.

I think we put way too much pressure on ourselves to “get back to normal.”

But postpartum isn’t something you need to rush through.

Your body just did something pretty incredible. You’re learning your baby, adjusting to a completely different routine, and figuring out motherhood as you go.

You’re allowed to look tired.
You’re allowed to feel different.
You’re allowed to still be figuring it out.

After three kids, I can tell you that those early days don’t last forever. They just feel like they might when you’re in the middle of them.

Give yourself some grace. You’re doing better than you think.
