What are three things you think every great portrait should have?
I’ve been a studio portrait photographer for some time now and these are a few things I believe really turn a good portrait into a great portrait 👇
1. Texture. Whether texture is coming from skin, the background, foreground, floor, clothing- having great, noticeable texture in a portrait really adds interest and depth! Texture makes things feel and look real and grabs attention.
2. Movement. Movement can be achieved in a few different ways when it comes to photography. Hair flowing in the wind, fabric cascading, dresses twirling, smoke floating, or even the way props are placed in the set (such as florals moving your eye across the portrait). It can be subtle or dramatic! But either way, it catches your viewers eye.
3. Cohesion. This can really make or break a portrait, in my opinion. Make it make sense! Every piece of your portrait should look like it fits- the tones you use, the clothing your subject is wearing, the lighting, the FEEL. If something is off, your portrait will definitely fade into obscurity.
