May is Mental Health Month, & this year, let's dive into the power of mindfulness & the challenge of staying present.
As a full-time social worker, I've seen firsthand how mindfulness can support individuals, families, couples, and it has helped me too, in navigating life's challenges.
I was trying to be mindful while I saw the northern lights.
One approach I'm focusing on is the DBT WHAT Skills, a tool that has benefited many. These skills are designed to help you navigate situations mindfully and without judgment. Here's a quick overview:
**Observe:** Start by paying close attention to your internal and external experiences. This means observing your thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations, and the environment around you as they occur, without judging them.
**Describe:** Next, practice putting words to your observations. Describe your thoughts and feelings in a nonjudgmental and objective manner. This skill can help clarify your experiences and improve communication with others.
**Participate:** Another crucial skill in staying present is to participate fully in the moment. This means being completely engaged in whatever you are doing, whether it's a work task, a conversation, or a simple daily activity. By immersing yourself in the present moment, you can avoid getting caught up in past regrets or future worries, allowing for a more fulfilling and mindful experience.
Being present isn't always easy, but by incorporating mindfulness practices like the DBT WHAT Skills, we can cultivate a greater sense of awareness and well-being in our lives. Let's embrace this Mental Health Month with a commitment to being more present and compassionate towards ourselves and others. ๐
