BLACK BREASTFEEDING WEEK | NOURISHMENT, IN ALL ITS FORMS 🖤🤎

pulling these images from my Birthlooms archives, the ending of a breastfeeding story I had the honor of documenting back in 2021.

i keep returning to the tenderness of this moment. the closeness. the exchange. the quiet rhythm between mama + baby. a cycle of needing, responding, receiving + nourishing.

there is something beautiful about the ways our bodies learn one another + the many ways we find to feed, hold + sustain our babies.

breast. chest. bottle.

nourishment can take many forms.

and during , I am thinking about Black breastfeeding not only as an act of feeding, but as a story held within our bodies, our families + our histories.

for generations, Black bodies have carried complicated histories around feeding, mothering + bodily autonomy. and still, Black families continue to create practices of tenderness, choice, nourishment + care.

this saturday, August 22nd, Natal Walks gathers inside the historic African Meeting House at the Museum of African American History | Boston & Nantucket, a place that has held generations of Black gathering, organizing, learning, resistance + imagining.

we enter that history carrying another part of our story:

black birth.
black breastfeeding.
black nourishment.
black family.
black care.

we’ll begin with grounding, gentle movement + sound, and conversation around Black breastfeeding before stepping together onto Boston’s Black Heritage Trail for a 1.5-mile community walk.

perhaps nourishment is also an inheritance. something passed body to body. hand to hand. generation to generation.

and perhaps part of tending to Black birthing families is making room for all the ways we nourish.

Baby’s first…

The tiniest milestones have a way of becoming the biggest memories.

Here’s to first smiles, first cuddles, first curious glances, first adventures + all the beautiful “firsts” that quietly become part of a family’s story. What an honor it is to preserve these fleeting moments before they become treasured memories.

Welcome to your first chapter, little one. We can’t wait to see where your story unfolds.

Big love to the Andrews family for allowing to capture these sweet moments with their family.

There’s something sacred about witnessing the perinatal season in real time, the waiting, the becoming, the soft unfolding.

This spring, we had the honor of archiving Fiqir + Toni at Boston Common as the city scape stretched into bloom + the Swan Boats began their seasonal return. The curls of spring, the water in motion, the tenderness of this chapter, all holding space for what’s to come.

A core value with , is the belief that memory preservation is part of care. To document these fleeting seasons for birthing families across Massachusetts is a gift I never take lightly.

Holding time, one story at a time.

To the fathers, grandfathers, uncles, big brothers, chosen family + birthing partners who walk alongside our families in the many seasons of the perinatal journey, we celebrate you. 🤎

From fertility journeys to pregnancy, birth, postpartum, loss, + early parenting, your presence matters. In the waiting rooms, at appointments, in delivery rooms, on sleepless nights, during tender recoveries + in the everyday acts of care, your love helps hold the village together.

Thank you for the steady hands, listening ears, protective hearts + the ways you show up, loudly and quietly. For carrying, comforting, advocating, witnessing + learning alongside us.

At Birthlooms, we honor the men + paternal caregivers in our community who remind us that perinatal care is not held by one person alone, it is collective, intergenerational + rooted in showing up for one another.

A Welcomed Father’s Day to you all!

NATAL WALKS | CELEBRATING THE MEN IN OUR VILLAGE

These photographs, captured through the lens, remind us why memory preservation matters.

Years from now, these images will tell a story.

A story of a family walking together.
A story of a little one surrounded by love.
A story of an uncle showing up.
An auntie lending a hand.
Parents finding community.
A village gathering in care.

These moments featuring one of our beloved Natal Walks families, Idora + Angel, alongside Idora’s siblings + kids, beautifully reflect what Natal Walks has always been about: the understanding that families thrive in community.

As we gather this Father’s Day weekend, we celebrate the fathers, grandfathers, uncles, brothers, partners, godfathers, + chosen family members whose love helps hold families through pregnancy, postpartum + beyond.

Caregiving has never been a solo journey. It has always been collective. It has always been village.

This upcoming Saturday June 20th, we invite you to bring yours.

Bring the dads.
Bring the grandpas.
Bring the uncles.
Bring the brothers.
Bring the cousins.
Bring the friends who feel like family.

Come walk, connect, celebrate + create memories together because one day these ordinary moments become the stories we are most grateful to remember.

NATAL WALKS | Little feet. Tiny giggles. Big community love.

This past Saturday’s NATAL WALKS reminded us that perinatal care is never just about birthing parents, it’s about the village. Watching our littles explore, play, rest, snack, dance + simply be held in community alongside their birthing parents, aunties, uncles, grandparents + chosen family felt so deeply special.

Natal Walks is growing into the soft, intergenerational space we’ve always dreamed of, one rooted in gentle movement, fresh air, collective care + belonging for the whole family. 🤎

Special thanks to Aunty + Aunty for holding our little with such care.

name a core memory as a child… story time for sure..

whether story time happened snuggled up on the family couch in the living room, or in bed with your parents + siblings or at school with your favorite teacher + friends, story time, with a good book can plant such amazing seeds of imagination, creativity + dreaming.

in this seasonal season, I had to take it back to this beautiful archive at the opening of almost two years ago. these stills remind me of the power of stories + the joy of honoring your own.

When’s the last time you took a family portrait or held a family photo up close…

I have been exploring my roots in film photography over the last few months + the feelings + memories have been coming through so loudly.

I came across these gems taken at my last workshop. I am still struck with how truly amazing it was to witness so many families inhabit + make it their own.

The nostalgia, the memories that unfolded, the laughter that rung through…the joy reclaimed…

How are you preserving the memory of you + those you love…

Big love to + her little ones for joining us this day…

feeling that 70 degree weather yesterday got me in “sprummer” feelings… you know that New England transition from spring to summer that we yearn for, for the newness of life around us + the glow of the sun pouring in to us.

also holding in mind the spring + summer babies who make their debut during this season + the birthing persons with witnesses it all…

as we once again welcome spring… what memories will you make this season…

s/o to my dear friend + new mama for this sweet sweet prenatal season last spring…

witnessing a growing family is truly a miraculous thing + even sweeter is getting to co-journey with family when their little ones are becoming big brothers + sisters…

the image of outstretched hangs, gazing eyes of wonder, the best hugs + the lingering curiosity is truly profound…

on this cold winter morning, i am savoring these moments.

big love to the Rojas family for inviting me to witness this milestone back in 2020…
