This Mother’s Day, we invite you to hold these stories close.

FORESYTHE: Midwifery + The Black Birthing Family is more than an anthology. .tdp is a living archive of Black motherhood, birth, lineage, healing, memory + becoming.

Created alongside 11 Birthlooms Storytellers across Massachusetts, these pages carry the voices of mothers, daughters, midwives, and families reflecting on what it means to birth, nurture, remember + return to ourselves.

Within FORESYTHE, motherhood becomes water, refuge, resistance, softness, survival, prayer + home.

“Before the sound of the heartbeat comes the sound of the water.” — Priscilla Andrade |

“That’s the kind of mother I want to be… because she’ll call anyway. Because it feels like home.” — Charlotte Shook |

These stories remind us that mothering is ancestral work. That our bodies carry histories of grief + joy, rupture + resilience. That Black birth + Black motherhood deserve to be witnessed with tenderness, complexity + care.

This season, we hope FORESYTHE finds its way into the hands of mothers, daughters, aunties, grandmothers, birthworkers, healers + anyone longing for stories that nourish + affirm.

Let these words sit beside your morning tea, your open windows, your quiet moments of reflection + your family gatherings this Mother’s Day weekend. Gift a copy to someone you love or to yourself.

Featuring our Birthlooms Storytellers:

Priscilla Andrade | Stephanie Campbell | Sabrina Correia | Soraya Dosantos | Joëlle Fontaine | Lanisha Harrison | Lyv Norris | Ebere Oparaeke | Mardia Pierre | Jo-Anna Rorie | Charlotte Shook

Together with a foreword by Nashira Baril from + the visual and cinematic work of .black.birthing created by + , FORESYTHE stands as an offering rooted in remembrance, reclamation, and collective care.

ARTIFACT + HEIRLOOMS | MIDWIFERY + THE BLACK BIRTHING FAMILY

On this Mother’s Day, we honor the mothers, grandmothers, midwives, doulas, aunties, healers + birthing families whose lives + stories live within Midwifery + The Black Birthing Family.

These visual archives, through film, photography, oral histories, perinatal artifacts, heirlooms + testimony, are more than documentation. They are living evidence of Black birth, Black care, Black memory + Black survival.

Created alongside our Birthlooms Storytellers, this work traces the sacred + complicated landscapes of mothering across generations. It holds the postpartum tears + kitchen table laughter, the prayer closets + hospital rooms, the grief, the tenderness, the ancestral memory + the people who mother us back to ourselves.

Every portrait is an act of reclamation.
Every testimony is an offering.
Every artifact carried into this archive reminds us: we were always here.

As we celebrate Mother’s Day, we lift up the beauty, labor, brilliance + truth of Black birthing families + the perinatal practitioners who continue to hold entire communities through care.

May these stories remind us that mothering is not only biological, it is communal, ancestral, embodied + deeply political.

If you are witnessing this work, you are now part of the circle.

May you view slowly.
May you remember your own lineage of care.
May you ask yourself gently:

What story do I live to tell?

“Catherina, originally Catherine by my mother, my father wanted to give it a hispanic twist, so he changed the "e" to an "a". My true story began when I came to understand who Jesus is; how I could have a meaningful relationship with him and the impact it would have on all relationships in my life. From family, friends, marriage, and children, to my passion as a dancer and therapist, Jesus has directed my path in all that I do in this world, and how I strive to serve him in the purpose he has for me and the relationships in this blessed life he has sacrificed for me.”
