Color Lore: Fun Facts About Colors to Celebrate the Launch of the Afrocentered Color Series

Lastly, we celebrate Black 🖤⚫🐈‍⬛🎬🏴♣️🕷️

Black is the color of strength, elegance, mystery, and possibility. Found in the night sky, rich volcanic soil, onyx, and countless beautiful skin tones, it symbolizes resilience, wisdom, protection, and the richness of our heritage. Black reminds us that from darkness comes creation, that our roots run deep, and that beauty, power, and brilliance can exist all at once.

This is the final volume, so these will be the last posts about color coming out over the next 7 days leading up to the Nubian Block Party (THIS SATURDAY) on July 25 from 12–8 pm at Black Market Nubian.

Thank you for your support! Comment below or send me a message with your favorite fun facts, cultural meanings, or memories connected to the color Black.

Today we celebrate Brown 🤎🪵🍂🦌🤎🐻🥥

Brown is the color of the earth, stability, warmth, and abundance. Found in rich soil, tree bark, cocoa, coffee, and countless beautiful skin tones, it symbolizes grounding, resilience, nourishment, and connection to our ancestors. Brown reminds us that strong roots create lasting growth and that beauty is often found in the natural world around us.

Today we celebrate Grey 🩶🌫️🐘🪨☁️🩶

Grey is the color of balance, wisdom, resilience, and reflection. Found in storm clouds, ancient stone, wise hair, and city skylines, it reminds us that strength often lives in the space between extremes. Grey also symbolizes sophistication, timelessness, and quiet confidence.

Catch me vending at the Nubian Block Party on Saturday, July 25th from 12-8pm📚📸. Come out to support local Black owned businesses and buy some of my books, prints, and moreeeeee👀

Black Market Nubian proudly presents Nubian Block Party 2026, returning to Nubian Square in Roxbury, Boston on Saturday, July 25, 2026.

This gathering began with a simple truth: Nubian Square deserved a celebration that carries the memory of our people in the center of the city. What started in the streets has grown into one of Roxbury’s most powerful cultural events, built by community, powered by legacy, and rooted in the Black brilliance that has always moved through this historic district.

This year, we gather again with live music, local vendors, food, family activities, dancing, community connection, and the unmistakable energy of Nubian Square. The physical Black Market space has shifted, but the work has not ended. Black Market Forever means the culture continues. It means Roxbury still has a place to gather, celebrate, remember, build, and be seen.

What began as an idea, a feeling, and a deep desire to honor Black and Black q***r life through photography and color has now become something tangible that can be held, shared, and experienced. The first volume is officially available on Barnes & Noble and there is one more print copy at JustBook-ish ✨
This project is more than a book to me—it’s a celebration of visibility, beauty, memory, and the many ways we tell our stories. Through Black q***r photography and color theory, this volume explores identity, emotion, and the richness of seeing ourselves reflected with intention and care.
To everyone who has supported, encouraged, inspired, and believed in this work along the way: thank you. Your love helped bring these pages into the world. I will do another announcement when the others are available!

Behind This Photo: A collective vibration unfolding in real time.
Presented within the energy of the Inner Sanctum in Boston in 2016. The room carried a pulse of freedom of movement, of artists trying out their voices for the first time, of new creativity.
As we continue reflecting through the Afrocentered Color Series Volume 2, we return to one of the most immersive pieces in the collection. This photograph draws us inward — beyond color, beyond stillness — into sensation itself.
The purple here felt transcendent: rich like ancestral wisdom, soft like vulnerability, powerful like transformation moving through the body. It wasn’t simply seen; it surrounded the space like vibration, like meditation, like a quiet reminder that art can awaken what words alone cannot reach.

Location: Inner Sanctum (Inner City Sanctuary of the Arts), Nubian Square, Boston, MA
