The Boston Figurative Art Center is planning an expansion into the heart of Union Square, Somerville, a vibrant location within easy walking distance of the new Union Square Green Line T station. The space, a total of 3700 square feet, would include a classroom/event space and small gallery opening directly onto Bow street, and 12 small individual and potentially shared studio spaces for artists, artisans, writers, etc, which will be available for rent. The gallery would feature examples of work by each artist who wanted to exhibit, and the BFAC would retain a small commission from sales from this gallery space. Spaces range from about 250 square feet to under 100 square feet. There are five spaces with windows, and seven spaces without windows. All tenants would have access to the community space during times it was not being used for classes or events, and to the simple kitchen facilities, and most studios have sinks. All tenants would receive the member discount rate if they wanted to attend figure drawing and painting sessions and other events, such as Drawing as Meditation sessions, literary evenings, artist demonstrations, lectures, etc.
The entire space has air conditioning, one half-bath and one full bath (toilet and shower) and would offer 24 hour access to artist/tenants. Cost for windowed spaces would be approximately $450/month plus utilities, and for non-windowed spaces $350 per month plus utilities. There is no deeded parking with the building, but artists with leases would be entitled to apply for Somerville Artist parking permits at a cost of $75 per year from the city of Somerville. There is also unofficial parking in a few lots around the area after business hours, and two-hour metered parking is available.
If you or someone you know would be interested in being put on a waiting list (no-obligation) for these new BFAC Union Square studio spaces, please respond to [email protected].
