In addition to Sal Lopes’ work from ‘Living with AIDS’ we also have a collection of silver prints from an earlier series ‘Ocean Drive’ in which Lopes documented the beachgoers in Newport over the course of three years in the early 1980s. Autumn marks Leica Store & Gallery Boston’s 10th anniversary.

We opened our doors eager to introduce the Boston area to the world of Leica and to bring a new energy into the existing photographic community. Over the years we have offered classes, public programming, and a rotating set of exhibitions that have engaged and inspired many.

Our upcoming exhibition, ‘Community Garden: Celebrating 10 Years of Leica Boston,’ reunites 12 photographers who have exhibited with us previously: Mathieu Bitton, Ismail Ferdous, Svet Jacqueline, Luvia Lazo, Vanessa Leroy, Constantine Manos, Mary Ellen Mark, Jennifer McClure, Phil Penman, Alex Webb, Rebecca Norris Webb, and Eva Woolridge.

The exhibition also welcomes four emerging photographers: Mav Fernandez, Raphael Lehnen, Artemisia Luk, and AbdoulNasser Mika. Together, these artists reflect the evolving creative energy of Boston’s photographic community while demonstrating the continued relevance of Leica cameras across generations.

Join us for the Opening Reception on Friday, August 14th from 6-8PM. The following day, Saturday, August 15th we’ll be hosting an Artist Talk with photographers from the exhibition from 12-2PM. And to round out a weekend of celebrations, we’re doing a Photowalk around through the neighborhood on Sunday, August 16th from 2-4PM.

Congratulations to Camille Farrah Lenain .lenain on the publication of her photobook ‘Made of Smokeless Fire’ with ✨

In 2024, Camille was awarded the Leica Women Foto Project grant for this body work which delicately explores the lives of q***r Muslims in France. We were honored to exhibit images from ‘Made of Smokeless Fire’ in our Spring 2025 exhibition ‘Reclamation, Resilience, Rebirth,’ alongside work from Luvia Lazo, Dola Posh, and Stasia Schmidt.

Happening tomorrow— Join us for an artist talk with Sal Lopes to learn more about our current exhibition ‘Living with AIDS.’

In Living with AIDS, Lopes explores how the city of Boston was affected by the AIDS Crisis. From 1988 to 1992, Lopes traced three interconnected stories— the NAMES Project AIDS Quilt and its display in both Boston and Washington D.C.; the Buddy Program, run by the AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts, which offered volunteer support to those living with AIDS; and the Boyce family, whose adopted child Brianna was living with AIDS.

Our current exhibition ‘Living with AIDS’ with photographer Sal Lopes features many images from demonstrations and public gatherings surrounding the AIDS Memorial Quilt. He also sought out to show other ways Bostonians came together during this time, once of which being the Buddy Program coordinated by the AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts. The initiative provided intensive training for volunteers to offer long-term support and empathy once assigned to a ‘buddy’ living with AIDS. Lopes was accepted into the buddy training program, and the experience earned him the trust and respect within the community needed for the project. These two images show buddies Thom and Alan, and Joann and Tara, tenderly arm in arm, holding each other. Here, Lopes’ photographs offer a glimpse into the physical and emotional support the Buddy Program offered.

Such an incredible opening last night at for Constantine Manos’ ‘Where’s Boston: 50 Years Later.’

We were so honored to present a selection of this work last year in the gallery alongside prints from Iaritza Menjivar and Stella Johnson. While we focused on Manos’ generational relationships with Boston-area photographers, this exhibition brings his images into focus in a new way. This thoughtful and carefully arranged exhibition honors not only Manos’ profound photographic skills, but it also reveals how Boston has changed and transformed over the past 50 years. The images show how Manos traversed across the city to document neighborhoods, community groups, public gatherings, and protests, all to show that Boston means something different to us all. Congratulations to the whole team at the Athanaeum and Lauren Graves for such a successful evening.

There’s new photographs up in our exhibition space at the Boston Park Plaza!

These compelling black and white photographs are from a new series titled ‘Boston Lines’ by the talented JuanCarlos Gonzàlez and offer a surreal and abstract view of our beloved city.

Gonzàlez is a Puerto Rican photojournalist and visual storyteller based in Plymouth, Vermont. In 2025, he was selected for Leica’s 100 Photographers spotlight and became the first Puerto Rican to present a solo exhibition at a Leica Gallery with his exhibition ‘Vermont Female Farmers’ at Leica Gallery Boston. His work has been featured in leading publications including Leica Fotographie International, Vogue Italia, The Boston Globe, and National Geographic. His projects are frequently lauded for their emotional depth, cultural sensitivity, and grounding in a sense of place. Be sure to follow and support JuanCarlos and to make time to see these gorgeous images.

Thank you so much to everyone who joined us Thursday evening for the opening reception of our new exhibition, ‘Living with AIDS’ from photographer Sal Lopes.

It was truly so meaningful to come together and celebrate this important body of work— to remember, mourn, honor, and love all the lives lost during the AIDS crisis here in Boston, and throughout the country.

If you weren’t able to join us for the opening, we encourage you to come to the Artist Talk which will take place on Saturday, June 27th from 12-2PM. Lopes will talk broadly about his career as a platinum printer and photographer before speaking about making ‘Living with AIDS’.

Join us tonight from 6-8PM in celebrating the opening of ‘Living with AIDS’, an important and beautiful body of work from local photographer Sal Lopes.

In Living with AIDS, Lopes explores how the city of Boston was affected by the AIDS Crisis. From 1988 to 1992, Lopes traced three interconnected stories— the NAMES Project AIDS Quilt and its display in both Boston and Washington D.C.; the Buddy Program, run by the AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts, which offered volunteer support to those living with AIDS; and the Boyce family, whose adopted child Brianna was living with AIDS.

After spending the 1980s documenting Vietnam War veterans and the Vietnam Memorial in Washington D.C., Lopes was touched by the grief and mourning of those who had lost their lives or loved ones to AIDS. He began his documentation first with the AIDS quilt, then turned his lens to community efforts like the Buddy Program, and familial relationships with the Boyce’s.

Opening during Boston Pride weekend, this exhibition offers a moment to reflect, honor those whose lives were lost during the epidemic, and to uplift those living with AIDS today.
