Sunrise over the Chasm, Rocky Mountain National Park

This morning I embarked on a final sunrise mission for the summer before I start school again tomorrow. I left the Longs Peak Trailhead at 2am and hiked over 5 miles to get to this ridge connecting Mount Lady Washington and Longs Peak by 6am. My gamble paid off and I was treated to a spectacular sunrise with breaking clouds and the first rays of sunlight passing through and illuminating the east face of Longs Peak (14,259’).

Happy September! The first golden hues are already beginning to appear among the aspens. It won’t be long before nature puts on her best show of the year! Here are some photos I took last fall to celebrate. Hopefully I can be as productive this year too!

What is alpenglow? The word comes from the German Alpenglühen, “glow of the Alps,” and it describes a pink or purple glow seen on mountain peaks when the sun is below the horizon. The peaks are in shadow, and what lights them is sunlight scattered off water v***r and particles in the atmosphere, bounced back down onto the snow or rock. I’ve seen many fellow photographers mistake the first light of sunrise on a summit for alpenglow, but if the sun is up and the shadow line is moving down the face, that is direct light. Alpenglow is a softer, more subtle glow that appears before sunrise or after sunset.

Just as I was about to pack up my gear and head home, the sun made a final appearance over the mountains before dipping below the horizon.

Longs Peak standing high above Lake Haiyaha in the evening light, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado.

Yesterday I spent the evening at Lake Haiyaha photographing this tranquil scene. Getting to this side of the lake from the usual viewpoint on the opposite side wasn’t easy! Granite boulders the size of large vehicles line the shoreline of this alpine glacial lake.

Last light reaches the tops of a stand of Engelmann spruce above the valley floor in the Gunnison National Forest near Crested Butte. On clear days when there aren't any clouds to include in grand landscape compositions, I try and pick out smaller, more intimate scenes like this one instead.

On this particular evening I was camped near Crested Butte with several other photographers. We were sitting around talking when all of us noticed these trees at the same time, off across the valley, catching the last of the light. We sat there and watched it for a moment before it occurred to anyone that this is the sort of thing we are supposed to be photographing. Then we all ran for our vehicles to get our gear and set up before it was gone.
