The bald eagle is one of America’s greatest conservation success stories. As a wildlife photographer who spends hundreds of hours observing animals, I’ve learned that wildlife doesn’t just need protection from direct harm. It needs healthy forests, rivers, wetlands, and coastlines where animals can feed, nest, hunt, and raise their young.

The recovery of bald eagles didn’t happen simply because we stopped killing eagles. It happened because we protected habitats and for decades, the Endangered Species Act recognized that destroying an endangered species’ habitat could itself constitute “harm.” This week, the Trump administration removed habitat destruction from the Act’s definition of “harm,” making it harder to use the ESA to protect the forests, rivers, wetlands, and other places endangered wildlife needs to survive.

Habitat loss is the greatest threat facing most endangered species. If we stop protecting their homes, we shouldn’t be surprised when we lose the animals too.

➡️If you’d like to help:
• Donate to support the Center for Biological Diversity’s legal challenge to this change to the Endangered Species Act (link in bio)
• Contact your members of Congress to voice your concern and demand stronger protections for endangered species and their habitats.

Canyons create the most beautiful interplay of light and shadow. I loved watching this common merganser drift into a patch of early morning sunlight before disappearing back into the darkness.

A baby prairie dog returns to mom looking for affection, which is granted warmly. I’m so grateful for these special little moments I get to witness, and so grateful to share the world with such wonderful little creatures.

One of life’s greatest gifts is the ability to slow down and notice the world around you. When you do, even the most common animals reveal extraordinary behaviors, like prairie dogs performing their joyful little jump-yips to communicate with the rest of the colony.

I set out with my big telephoto lens to find bighorn sheep and, instead, I found myself laying on my belly happily photographing a very charming, unidentified beetle traversing the canyon terrain. Wildlife photography is wonderfully unpredictable, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Also, any entomology friends out there with an ID?

Here’s to the wild places, the wild creatures that inhabit them, and the humans who care enough to stand up for their protection. Among our country’s greatest ideas was the idea that not every place should be conquered, developed, or owned. Some places should simply remain wild. Happy Birthday, America. Here’s to hope and to action.
