Nostalgia Series: Swiss Army Knife (48"x48"

The Nostalgia Series is a personal archive of play, and the Swiss Army Knife was one of my earliest rites of passage. I was nine when my grandma gave me my first one, after watching MacGyver with my best friend Sam, slack‑jawed at how he could get out of anything with just that red pocketknife. To me, it was more than a tool—it was possibility in my pocket.

Photographed here as artifact, the knife is transformed from childhood tool to cultural relic. Printed much larger than life, the red enamel and polished steel reveal textures and stories invisible at pocket size, magnifying its role as both memory and artifact.

This page has been the half-forgotten stepchild of my Instagram — time to change that.

I’ll be using this space to share my fine-art photography, starting with Extrapolation, a collaboration with painter Will Day.

Extrapolation explores the micro-compositions hidden within Will’s brushwork — the texture, movement, and interaction of ink and pigment. From there, I added a second layer of abstraction by introducing liquid in motion, creating a dialogue between paint and fluid dynamics.

What started as an experiment in detail turned into a reminder of how much beauty hides in plain sight.

Less is more (the term coined by famous architect Ludwig Miles van der Rohe) is something I’m a big fan of…and probably no surprise for anyone following my work 😂
I love compositions like this that just let the product do the talking (absolutely delicious product that is, big props ).
For the photogs who also know I love a good gradient, the soft highlight on the left is created by pulling the light back from the diffusion but still keeping the diffusion close to the product. The highlight on the right is intentionally hard to give it a graphic feel. The gradient in the background is also real…something I’m also a big fan of because I like how the light spill from the key light makes it more authentic.
I’m always open to any questions on setup, feel free to ask!

It’s been a long minute since I posted and I appreciate everyone sticking around through the quiet period. The truth is it’s been a fairly quiet year (I think for a lot of creatives). The upside of that is that I’ve been focusing on personal work and particularly a series based on Nostalgia which I hinted at a while back with the Polaroid pic. But sticking true to a medium I absolutely love this is some more cosmetics splashing in to liquids stuff :-) I’m also a sucker for blue on yellow.

I still geek out on the splashes and the shapes they create! Used an old funnel method for the splashes on this one (you can see the splashes in slide 3) instead of using my Splashatron 3000. A lot less setup but I think I prefer using the Spashatron 3000 :-)

Feel like it’s been a long minute since I posted, sorry about that! Just finished up a project with the glasses and got some stuff I’m really happy with. If you know me you know that it’s no secret that I froth on details. Capturing this teeny tiny camera and trying to show some light/gradient was a challenge for sure. Used a 100mm lens at F13 with a 20 frame photo stack using Helicon Focus. This was a 2 light setup with a grid on the key light and backlight and a small silver bounce card. I turned off the backlight to get the gradient in the lens (swipe to see wider shot). I used micro grip to Jerry rig the glasses and allow me to alter the angle etc.

There are three lights in the BTS of this shot but I only ended up using two. The back light which creates that beautiful gradient and the light underneath which creates the blue glow. With the bottom light off this actually looked really cool in a monochromatic way.
For the photo folks: this is a clear acrylic tray with cinefoil at the bottom to black it out. I cut a hole in the cinefoil under the bottle to create the glow. I used a 50mm lens at F13.

This image without any color on n the mirrors was the original concept for this shoot and although I gravitate more towards the version with color shown in the BTS I do love how subtle this version is. A lotttt of placing little mirrors in a “uniform” grid 😂.

Another shot from the series from a while back. I shot this with condensation on the bottle too which I’m usually a big fan of but because of the graphic nature of the shot it just made everything look a little muddied.
I did also shoot the bottles individually (seen in 4th slide) to add more contrast in the final image.
