Many people may think photography is just pushing a button whilst aiming at a subject. But this shows it’s more than that.

I have been avidly searching for baby grouse to photograph for about 2 years now. Every time I get close, I always get distracted by something else in the area.

When a mother grouse has young, she will try and take the attention off her babies and onto herself. She does this to protect her babies from any predators in the area. Every time I have been near a mom and her chicks in the past, I find myself looking at the mom instead. I’m in such awe as to how far a mother will go to protect her young, even sacrificing herself. This grouse is not quite a baby anymore, but the mom was still protecting her.

I had initially seen the mom run in the opposite direction of her chick. When I saw her do this, I heard her young chirping behind me. I slowly turned around just in time to see this youngling jump onto the tree branch. I snapped a few quick photos, and continued on leaving the family in peace.
