There are all sorts of philosophies about photography. I subscribe to one that sees the photographer as a witness - a witness to the moments, the looks, the emotions of a day. A witness in the average day, in days of celebration (like weddings), or during days of grief or hardship (funerals or memorial services). The photographer is there to notice, to pay attention, and to capture the moments that people will want to remember, or maybe didn’t even notice themselves. Photographers allow for time travel. It’s a special thing, capturing slivers of time in ones and zeros, or on film. We’re not quite magicians, but we’re very close.

In a few days I’ll be in Colorado witnessing the wedding of these two wonderful people. And it’s my privilege to capture the moments of this day they’ve been looking forward to for such a long time. They will have so much fun, they will be so happy, and I consider it a privilege to be their photographer.

I took photos of sweet Lennox and her mom yesterday afternoon. Lennox had a number of Beanie Babies, but one in particular stood out - a grey striped cat with blue eyes named Silver.

I got my brother the large Beanie Babies version of Silver for his second birthday. He carried Silver everywhere with him for years. It’s hard to think back on my brother’s younger years and not also think of Silver.

It was a special thing for me, a connection point in the overlapping relationships and timelines of life.

The front edge of an Iowan summer sunrise is perhaps one of my favorite moments of any sort of midwestern sunrise. The windmills scattered on the seemingly endless rolling hills blink in sync with each other as their long blades catch the first pink sunrays of morning. The trees that line the highway transform into two dimensional silhouettes. The barns and silos, too. I haven’t seen all of this country, but I have seen most of the Midwest, and I believe this to be one of the more mysteriously beautiful scenes to witness. Every few seconds the sky is a different gradient of bold yellows, oranges, and pinks. The blue of the daylight hours stealthily overtakes the short-lived early morning colors. Within minutes the explosion of morning color is gone, and its memory feels like a secret.

Around this time last year Sarah, the boys, and I went to a small cabin for the weekend as summer was drawing to a close and school was soon to start back up. During that weekend we imagined what it would be like if Lydia had been there with us, and we longed for and hoped for a future where she would be our daughter and she would come with us as a part of our family. Fast forward one year and here the summer is drawing to a close. School starts back up this week. We rented a small cabin in Iowa…and Lydia, our daughter, came with us. My heart is full. //

I walked out to check on the group of kids playing in my backyard tonight. The three year old neighbor girls says in her cute high pitched voice, “Andwooo…can I take a pit-twa of yooo?”

Sometimes stepping out my back door feels like walking into Never- Never Land. Kids playing imaginative games, no shoes, getting dirty and scraped up climbing up trees and playing in the yard. It’s a very special thing to me. It means so much to me for Micah in particular, who I love to overhear playing outside with our neighbors’ kids.

Yesterday he called me outside to say “It’s really pretty out here. The sun is shining on the house and its making a shadow on the ground of its shape. It’s really neat!”

I love that he notices even the simple things like that and appreciates it enough to tell me. That’s a life well lived, in my opinion. And it gives me joy. //
