Safe to say the ducks in Montana are having the best winter of their lives.

Over the Moonshine Still

As the full Hunter’s Moon of October rose from behind Ross Peak, I watched a group of whitetail deer cross back and forth over this creek. It was a scene I had wanted to capture ever since I started my photo journey with the moon, and there it was unfolding before me.

A stout buck was also roaming around the field, and I kept cheering for him to cross the moon lineup, but alas he was busy chasing tail. We’ll save him for another shot.

Pinch and zoom on the photo and see how many deer you can spot. Find em all and you win a cookie 🍪

Solar Swarm

I used the ol’ ten-thousand-rock ladder to get a little closer to the light show last night. It started with wind, clouds, and a spit of snow, but soon transformed into a calm summit with star-strewn skies and a breathtaking display of the Aurora above a group of powerfully humbling peaks. Here’s one of many shots from the night, buzzing with a favorite peak / lake duo.

The breadth of the sky is food for the soul.

A few photos from an early December cloud fire over some of my favorite open space ag fields in the Gallatin Valley. Practicing sunrise/sunset photography is what originally brought me to these places, but I find myself returning for a sense of calm, seeking inspiration, or to just have a good ol think. A lot of life’s answers are hidden in the sky.

The Beaver Moon over the Cannery District

After trying for several years, I finally had a chance to land a full moon on the tower during sunrise Monday morning. Although a few power lines blocked the landing angle, I still like this line up and was glad to see it come to life.

I’m dedicating this shot to one of the OG’s of the Cannery District, , and the good memories I had there with friends many moons ago. It’s wild how fast this place has changed. Check out 406 Brewing soon at their new location in Manhattan, MT 🍻

Fun fact: did you know that in 1912, the Gallatin Valley was known as the “pea capital of the nation”, producing 75% of the nation’s crop. The Cannery District was originally the home of the Bozeman Canning Company - canning said peas, as well as beans, and carrots. The still-standing steel water tower seen here was used as a water source for a fire suppression system and is now an iconic part of our skyline.

Around an evening fire

In the middle of my 12 day solo road trip around Colorado I found a bull moose dead head during a backcountry hike. Being a rare find, I cleaned it as best I could, bagged up the skull, and brought it along for the rest of the trip.

Every evening at camp I would move it from the truck bed to the cab so that I could sleep in the topper while keeping it protected. Of course it had a musky smell that always caught the nostrils off guard, but it wasn’t overwhelming and I was mostly just glad to not be camping in griz country.

After another quick trip around the Tetons, the moose is now home in Montana and ready for a deep clean. And by gum I finally have some space in my truck.
