Shout out Ellen Foster who spotted this sweet handsome Eastern Meadowlark yesterday while hiking to Deep Hole, Myakka through the meadow. Interesting fact- this bird is actually not in the lark family. He belongs to the blackbird family! His whistling song is high pitched like a flute. The Eastern Meadowlark can sing up to 100 different variations of its song. And although similar in appearance to the Western Meadowlark, their songs are drastically different!

My backyard was full of flurry today as the female red-bellied woodpeckers put on a display of aggressive calling and chasing for their prized male mate. Notice in the first picture the tension and fanning of her tail. This is typical female behavior when claiming a mate. The second pic shows the two just before they chase each other around the tree and charge at another again. The last is their highly desirable male! It was quite entertaining to watch this afternoon 🙂

The Pie-billed grebe. These little chunky swimmers have been hard for me to capture. They dive and submerge to catch small fish often and then shake off excess water for what seems like an eternity. Occasionally I have a moment like this, to watch the grebe bask in the sun for just enough time to capture the shot! You’ll find them in Florida in ponds/marshes with thick vegetation.
